We used to get the sweeping brush and twirl it around like Monkey. What a very strange programme!

It was a very strange programme
But I used to watch it avidly despite not having a clue what was going on.

Yes, we watched it too. But then again, we didn't have much choice back then. You just watched whatever came on next.

Peculiar23 · 25/08/2025 11:18

I was obsessed with Monkey ! My 6 year old head couldn’t work out why Tripitaka was clearly a girl !

The closing song was brilliant

Very true!

Dabberlocks · 25/08/2025 11:25

I went into the warehouse at work recently, they were doing a stocktake with stuff everywhere, and had also just had a large delivery arrive. "Looks like Steptoe's yard in here," I said. Cue blank faces all round.

🤣Same, I was obsessed with it & that silly theme tune. My parents thought it was a load of twaddle & dad used to take the pee.

Monkey wasn't as strange as the Singing Ringing Tree!!!

I did work this one out (when I was older).
they referred to Tripitaka as “boy”, although he did look fairly androgynous. However when they dubbed into English they thought he was a girl and got a woman to do the voice. It was a real head wringer for many years

YelloDaisy · 25/08/2025 13:46

‘Her indoors’

Was the song at the end gongora or something like that

sounds like vd

everardshutthatdoor · 25/08/2025 14:06

I was too young and naive to know that Larry Grayson’s “friend” Everard had a rude name!

everardshutthatdoor · 25/08/2025 14:07

Not so much a cultural reference but who remembers Sister Marion? (And who else thought she was a nun!)

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 25/08/2025 14:08

“Language, Timothy!”

SnowflakeSmasher86 · 25/08/2025 14:47

“I’ve got the key” when leaving the house/hotel room. Always followed by “I’ve got the secret” but my DCs have no idea why.

“Badger parade is off” when passing a deceased badger on the road. (Harry Hill). Drove past a bin bag in the road and my DD said “Bin bag parade is off” which made me laugh more than it probably should have!

Pigsy was hilarious.

RedRec · 25/08/2025 15:58

I was on a niche IT course once and could barely understand anything the teacher was saying, because of the complex subject matter. I discreetly scribbled a note to the young colleague next to me, saying "he sounds like Stanley Unwin" (he of the gobbledygook 'Unwinese' language). Thought it would make him smile but I just got a blank look.
