Are we going to be sick?

I bought ready made cottage pie for dinner today. I was really busy and lost track of how long it was in the oven for (usually always use the timer).

When i took it out the potato was burning hot, I even waited a bit before callijg DC over but as we were eating some lumps of meat felt cold inside.

We still ate it but I am.now massively worried as I'm usually really strict about reheating til hot throughout.

I've just woken up with cold sweats and really worried its the beginning of food poisoning.

What do you think?

Honestly, you really, really will be fine.

And please - get some help with your anxiety. (As well as learning a bit more about food hygiene - and I mean that kindly)

See I thought the problem was that I knew too much about food hygiene and ignorance would be bliss 😂

How on earth do you think you know enough about food hygiene, given what you’ve posted?!

Well bacteria can grow, especially with heat. So if it's heated, but not to the point where it's hot enough to kill bacteria, then all I've done is multiply the bacteria in the oven?

Isn't that why they say reheat til piping hot? Genuinely asking btw.

I do appreciate it's nowhere near as bad as it was previously cooked, not raw, but still the risk isn't zero. And unless its zero, then my brain will squeeze every little bit of worry out of that 😀

But you didn’t put the food back in the oven until it was piping hot! All you’ve been doing is worrying about it not being hot enough.

Bsud6houston · 22/08/2025 00:28

I explained why I didn't put it back in. Everyone had finished their meal by the point I got to that bit. It was a clump, the rest was so mixed in with hot potato you may not have noticed the meat wasn't hot.

Look - you’re either worried about food hygiene/getting sick or you’re not.

Clearly you really weren’t. Until you posted about it. I asked you if you were new to MN because I was wondering if you were messing with us. And now I think you are.

Lots of people have anxiety (about many things, not just food), and so posters here try to deal with them sympathetically.

Bsud6houston · 22/08/2025 00:31

But on the plus side the cold sweats have stopped so I should be OK for now!

Well of course you will be Hmm

OK never mind. I definitely wouldn't be willingly awake at 1am after a day of travelling when my alarm goes off in a few hours just for the fun of it personally.

What? This post makes no sense. The OP is worried about food poisoning from food not heated up enough. Why do you think she's on the wind up?

Fairtheewellmyhearties · 22/08/2025 01:02

I think you will be fine op and I hope you can get a good night’s sleep.

A lot of ready meals are choc a block with preservatives and salt. And it helps that it was thin.

Enjoy your holiday! 💐

Mossstitch · 22/08/2025 01:04

My son got food poisoning from undercooked burger on holiday once, violently ill less than two hours later after racing down country lanes to get back to accommodation in time, sheer will power held it back. If your alright by morning you'll be fine for a day out👍

StrawberryJangle · 22/08/2025 01:15

Well that's a few precious hours of sleep wasted before a big day out tomorrow.
It sounds like you've talked yourself in to feeling ill.

I hope you're asleep now. Enjoy your day out!

Bsud6houston · 22/08/2025 01:22

Still not asleep, will listen to sleep hypnosis track. This always happens, so much stress in the lead up to going away, I just about hold on and on day 1 I have a breakdown. If I hadn't undercooked the bloody meal I'm sure I would have found something else.

I've googled it and found stuff about listeria outbreaks in foods from that supermarket so now my brain is seeing 100% danger rather than something more rational.

Now worrying about ruining the kids day tomorrow by being exhausted so can sleep even less!

Thanks all for the kind words!

Were you fine, OP?

Yes we were totally fine! We did have a day of the littlest saying she had a tummy ache which was a bit stressful, but it passed.
