RAC Breakdown any good?

Always used AA, really happy with them as used a few times but price as trebbled this year! Cheapest they will come down to is £128 per year

RAC is quoting me £80

Anyone have any experience of using RAC?

Used twice (East Sussex) and absolutely amazing. Kind, helpful and went above and beyond.

I am with the RAC for the first time this year. I opted for the cheaper annual rate with a £40 call out charge as I have not had to use a call out service in years.
Last week my battery went. Car was outside the house, so I did not mind that it took 2.5 hours for the RAC man to arrive and I appreciated the text updates so I was able to take the dog out etc. The problem was resolved easily with a new battery fitted the next day by them. All in all, I was pleased with the service.

RAC left my daughter (and her dog) by the side of an A road from around 6.00 pm for around five hours on one of The worst nights of the year, stormy and with other traffic going by very close. they could not seem to comprehend that she had NO electric, no lights phone dying with no means to charge. And no way of getting out of the way of other traffic. Promises to come but they didn’t.

im so proud that her 20 yrs son took the initiative, from home, in phoning his AA and asking if they could help. They were there soon after the call, looked after her well, she really believes they may well have saved her life. And didn’t charge although she wasn’t a member.

no comment or apology from RAC

RAC mechanic rang me back after ringing me the first time to ascertain what the problem was. He’d said he wouldn’t be able to fix it as electrical so I said fine then come and recover me as per my cover. He’d said ok, rang back five mi s later and said he’d checked with the call centre and i wasn’t covered for caravan recovery.

so he didn’t come and I had to sort myself out.

rang the call centre a few eeeks later to upgrade my cover as thought I’d fucked up and turns out I was covered and the mechanic was a big fat liar who couldn’t be arsed to come out to me.

Haven’t had luck with RAC. Whenever we get a new car it’s with rac for a year.

Britannia rescue for years now and I would recommend

Appalling, we had home start and they took three days to come out, all the while saying they were on their way

They kept saying “I’m sure you understand we have to prioritise people broken down away from home”. Well, ok but why did you sell me home start for extra £60 if you never have capacity to attend?

Different car bad luck on our behalf. Dh broke down at work. Rang the rac so perfectly safe. First chap was out in 2 hours and recovered back to home an hour after that.

AA is so so much better. RAC take ages to come out. Also, RAC's European cover is shit whereas AA's is brilliant

Horrific - do not. We had the misfortune of having to use them when the rental car we had broke down. I was literally stranded from 9pm until 6.30am by myself in the middle of January, with my car blocking the entire road and cutting off access to six homes. It was so dangerous and they literally did nothing. I ended up paying £650 for a private row truck to remove the car (electric hence specialist equipment needed) and only after going to the financial ombudsman was I reimbursed.
