If you love folk/acoustic music that speaks to your soul, what’s on your autumn playlist?

It’s fast approaching my favourite season Autumn and I have started to think about a playlist with music that feels seasonal to me, whether that’s for nostalgic reasons or because it makes me feel connected to the Autumn months.

I like good story telling in music anyway but for some reason it just feels more apt in Autumn…

On my list so far I have The River Sessions by Bert Jansch, fabulous stories and lovely anecdotes, I find his voice calming and interesting and I particularly love his version of “in the bleak mid-winter” which is just beautiful.

Joni Mitchell’s album (Blue) which I grew up with but really spoke to my heart when I was heavily pregnant with our 1st child over the “ber” months and my husband had just started his military training and was away for most of it. There for the happy moments, and more lonely and “River” can still take me back to those a moments.

And lastly, so far Sufjan Stephen’s Mystery of Love, the intro and his voice just speaks to me and it’s my “rainy/snowy day, look out the window” song.

If like me music and seasons speak to your souls, let me know what else I should add and what it means to me and how you discovered it.

You might like Kacey Musgraves' "Deeper Well" album.

I like listening to Pentangle at this time of year and Nick Drake and John Denver. Also a big Joni Mitchell fan and Crosby, Stills and Nash. Will check out some of the recommendations on here.

The new CD from UFQ (Urban Folk Quartet) was delivered yesterday and we’ve had it on 4 times on the bounce tonight as it’s great listening. I don’t know if I’d describe it as autumnal though. And honestly, although it’s great, I would prefer to recommend ‘Incidents and Accidents’ by Dan Walsh, the banjo player/guitarist who is part of UFQ. I listened to it on repeat through the headphones on a flight back from China some years ago and it has always stuck with me, although it isn’t recent.

I like to go back to the 70s at this time of year, it must be the brown and orange. Jackson Brown, Simon and Garfunkel, Don McLean, Fleetwood Mac…

Neil Young’s Harvest Moon is a massive favourite for me. Check out The Memory Band also, not very well known but just lovely music x

Ooh! I’ve been building my folk/acoustic playlist since about 2010 so I’ll be adding some of these!

My suggestions:

Iron & Wine
Seabear
Agnes Obel

I’ve also been listening to a German artist called Marie-Celestine recently; she sings with her Dad! She has the most angelic voice and he has one of the lowest bass voices I’ve ever heard. Sounds like a siren singing along with a ship and it’s GORGEOUS, well worth a listen!

I haven’t read the thread yet, but I will suggest Cody Francis, Mazzy Star, The Cranberries, Elliot Smith. And Vashti Bunyan. I think particularly Vashti Bunyan is the kind of music you mean, and not the others I mentioned.
