If you love folk/acoustic music that speaks to your soul, what’s on your autumn playlist?

It’s fast approaching my favourite season Autumn and I have started to think about a playlist with music that feels seasonal to me, whether that’s for nostalgic reasons or because it makes me feel connected to the Autumn months.

I like good story telling in music anyway but for some reason it just feels more apt in Autumn…

On my list so far I have The River Sessions by Bert Jansch, fabulous stories and lovely anecdotes, I find his voice calming and interesting and I particularly love his version of “in the bleak mid-winter” which is just beautiful.

Joni Mitchell’s album (Blue) which I grew up with but really spoke to my heart when I was heavily pregnant with our 1st child over the “ber” months and my husband had just started his military training and was away for most of it. There for the happy moments, and more lonely and “River” can still take me back to those a moments.

And lastly, so far Sufjan Stephen’s Mystery of Love, the intro and his voice just speaks to me and it’s my “rainy/snowy day, look out the window” song.

If like me music and seasons speak to your souls, let me know what else I should add and what it means to me and how you discovered it.

The new Laura Marling album, Patterns on Repeat, is very good. Someone up thread suggested Jason Isbell which is a great shout. His album, Southeastern, is one of my favourites.

Dougie Maclean...Caledonia is obviously so well known but he has lots of amazing songs. Gloomy Winter is lovely as is Silver and Gold, Over My Mountain, Ready for the Storm and lots more. Sandy Denny...Late November, No End, Who Knows Where The Time Goes. Ralph McTell as mentioned.Thea Gilmore also.

Joni Mitchell's Urge for Going is fab and The Decemberist's January Song.

Double Maclean is superb. Love his albums.

Coming on this thread for inspiration.

You asked how new music is discovered. For me, it’s either on the Apple ‘play chill mix’ on Siri, or instragram suggestions (I seem to be getting alot on instragram at the moment). I’m always asking Siri, ‘who’s singing’ and have discovered new artists including Roo Paynes, Axel Flovent, Seafret, Bianco White etc.

Fairport Convention, when Sandy Denny sang with them

Gretchen Peters. Often billed as country but I think she’s more folksy

Love Mary Black, can’t believe I forgot to list her, the Babes in Wood album should definitely be on my autumn playlist so thank you!

Its so tempting to come off piste and just name ALL the incredible folk artists I listen to, some that make me so happy but like this one but is on my, summer, “sitting in the garden, reminiscing about my parents doing the same” summer play list.

John Tams, Kate Rusby, Pete Seeger, and Bellowhead.

I like a bit of Kate Rusby. There is a lovely (true) story behind her latest song about a train driver who stopped his train because it looked like someone was going to jump in front of it. They began a relationship and are now married.

Kate Rusby is local to me.

Jellycatspyjamas · 19/08/2025 22:46

Joy to the world I guess by Findlay Napier and Rebecca Loebe is fabulous, I heard it the first Christmas after my mum died very unexpectedly and it totally summed up my feelings, fabulous song.

Ooo I'm enjoying this thread. I can't believe no one has mentioned Angus and Julia Stone yet.

And yes yes yes to Johnny Flynn, Nick Drake and Laura Marling.

ODFOx · 19/08/2025 22:58

If you love storytelling have you heard Lucy Ward? Or, more traditionally, a bit of Seth Lakeman is lovely indoors listening as the evenings get cooler.

BurntOrange · 19/08/2025 23:02

Lovely thread! Definitely Fleet Foxes first album. Also “The Trials of Van Occupanther” album by Midlake and many songs by The Innocence Mission
