If you love folk/acoustic music that speaks to your soul, what’s on your autumn playlist?

It’s fast approaching my favourite season Autumn and I have started to think about a playlist with music that feels seasonal to me, whether that’s for nostalgic reasons or because it makes me feel connected to the Autumn months.

I like good story telling in music anyway but for some reason it just feels more apt in Autumn…

On my list so far I have The River Sessions by Bert Jansch, fabulous stories and lovely anecdotes, I find his voice calming and interesting and I particularly love his version of “in the bleak mid-winter” which is just beautiful.

Joni Mitchell’s album (Blue) which I grew up with but really spoke to my heart when I was heavily pregnant with our 1st child over the “ber” months and my husband had just started his military training and was away for most of it. There for the happy moments, and more lonely and “River” can still take me back to those a moments.

And lastly, so far Sufjan Stephen’s Mystery of Love, the intro and his voice just speaks to me and it’s my “rainy/snowy day, look out the window” song.

If like me music and seasons speak to your souls, let me know what else I should add and what it means to me and how you discovered it.

Johnny Flynn makes some lovely music. I like him a lot, especially as he has worked a lot with Robert Mcfarlane who is a wonderful nature-writer, poet, storyteller…

Noah Kahan!

I really like Paul Weller's version of Black is the Colour.

I also quite like Karine Polwart but only the really miserable ones!

There's an album by King Creosote called From Scotland With Love that has some gorgeous songs on it. (There's an accompanying film as well, on YouTube probably.) I know loads of non-Scots who love it!

LochAndHeather · 19/08/2025 15:27

William Prince and Jason Isbell for me.

William Prince has been a favourite of mine for a few years now - his voice is just so calming.

Momstermash94 · 19/08/2025 15:27

Noah Kahan, Amble, Kingfishr

We LOVE King Creosote, My favourite girl is DH’s soppy song that he puts on for me when he is few beers down at the weekend.

Despite living in the SW we are both Scottish so often like having a night listening to Scottish folk song writers.

Thank you for reminding me.

Oh well, you know how good he is, then! My Favourite Girl is a tearjerker. I think I love Leslie best. It's a proper love song!

Oisin Leech's album Cold Sea is quite ethereal.

Sidebeforeself · 19/08/2025 15:35

This is very literal but Autumn Leaves by Nat King Cole and Forever Autumn by Justin (cant remember his surname) Also Memories by Elvis Presley. Its a beautiful song but not one that people seem to play now.

They are not folky songs but always get me feeling seasonal.

Ah sorry to make you cry! The Elvis song I mentioned gets me every time too.

Nick Drake - all his albums have a permanent home on my ancient iPod. Also agree with the op’s choice of Bert Jansch, and I also love his late friend and contemporary John Renbourn.

Forever Autumn by Justin (cant remember his surname)

Justin Hayward. It's from Jeff Wayne's War of the Worlds.

Through autumn's golden gown we used to kick our way

I walk along singing it to myself when the fallen leaves are piling up on the pavement.
