Hive - heating

Hello

Our plumber has just installed a new boiler and is recommending HIVE.

Does anybody know if there are any hidden costs with it or with the app? I can't see for looking online.

Thank you

I’ve got it, no hidden costs.

I love it! Saves me money.

I've got it. No extra costs. Well there are a few extras you could choose to have but you don't need them. My best use was leaving Heathrow for Edinburgh in a very cold November and switching the heating up before I left so my house was cozy. I even switched the hot water and electric blanket on from afar.

You can upgrade your Hive account but I didn't do it and am very happy with the degree of control it gives me. It's a really good system when heating costs are fearsome! The upgrade offers for example more detailed usage information and statistics.

ThePhantomoftheEcobubbleOpera · 18/08/2025 19:49

You can use Hive without any cost but there's an option to upgrade to hive plus (£4/month) with additional features. There's a free trial so you can try it out but I don't think it's really worth it.

Applepe · 18/08/2025 19:51

You can pay for extra functions, but there’s no need for them. I remember introducing Hive to my partner who thought it was a modern miracle and later confessed to sitting at work wondering if the cat was cold and switching it on, ‘just in case’. 🤣

FloofyKat · 18/08/2025 19:55

I have Hive and it does a great job. No hidden costs. Upgrade if you want which costs but I don’t have any need for it.

LIZS · 18/08/2025 19:58

It is a one off cost. The issue is if your wifi goes down so you cannot access the app.

LividSquidward · 18/08/2025 19:59

I’ve saved a shitload of money with Hive now I have valves on every radiator. No need to heat every room.

No hidden costs or annoying subscriptions (looking at you, Ring doorbell…) and I can ask Alexa to turn on the lights and boost the heating.

StrokeRecovery25 · 18/08/2025 20:00

Does anyone have any experience with Tado v Hive?

I've house sat with Hive & hated it (but it may have been set up badly?) so thought about trying Tado instead.

I need to get something sorted as my current thermostat has died.

(sorry for slight hijack @Gini87 )

Does it not come with a manual thermostat? Surely it must??

I have Hive because it was free with my boiler. I didn't want to control it on my phone by an app so they simply installed it without the hub so I just have the thermostat controller on my wall which I set manually and it then works to my desired schedule. Presumably if your WiFi goes off you can therefore set anything you need to on the actual thermostat controller.

You don't need Alexa though do you? That little madam isn't welcome here! 🤪

It does but more limited in function. You can use it with alexa but otherwise just need an app on phone.

Yeah it does. That gives you everything a regular thermostat would. The app is just a way of doing it from your phone, and with a couple more features like looking at the history, how long it was on for etc.

👍🏻. Maybe I should just get hive & forget about Tado? My friends put me off when I house sat, but maybe hers was just badly set up?!

Timemyluckchanged · 20/08/2025 20:48

We had basic hive installed when we changed our boiler. It’s brilliant, would total recommend it and no additional costs if you don’t upgrade.
