DS going into year 7, looking to get an old iPhone. What parental controls do your DC have on their smartphone? Appreciate any advice/guidance. Many thanks

DD is 11yo and has an iPhone, I have it set to:

  • eequire my approval for app installs and removals
  • require my approval for additions to contacts
  • shut down access to all apps between set times
  • require my approval for purchases
  • explicit content blocked and age rating applied
  • i have the master password for the device

i will loosen control as she ages but I’ve basically gone for as locked down as possible at first. I also don’t allow TikTok or Snapchat but have allowed WhatsApp as loads of her friends use it to communicate. I check it daily and have it set to back up all what’s app messages to my iCloud account every day. It’s set to block messages from unknown contacts as individuals or in groups.

Amazing, thanks @InfoSecInTheCity
how do you backup WhatsApp messages to your iCloud? Do you get to monitor them from your device?

Very difficult to use parental controls on iPhone. As in, it's just not a secure as android.

I use Family Link on Android.

I have set the times when the phone locks down in the evening until it unlocks in the morning.
How long he can use certain apps for
He needs to request permission to install anything
I use the phone to track home when he’s out & about (he knows this)
We can see who he talks to on Snapchat (but not what he says)

We also have the understanding that we can at any point go and check his phone - that was discussed and agreed when he got it.

Be aware that you can hide chats in WhatsApp, so that they can only be seen when the user does FaceID! We didn’t know this beforehand…
