Lunchtime trying to search out a bag of pasta. The actual wall of my house shook, I was holding the handle of the kitchen cupboard, and I felt it ripple. - and my first thought was Montgomery!

But it was just a typhoon fighter jet intercepting a passenger flight who's radio broke.

I’ve never heard of it and live SE.

what the fisherman’s’ nationality got to do with it?

I would have thought that obvious. He was a new arrival in the area, he didn't speak English, he didn't know local history or understand warning signs.

Why? What are you talking about? I am just telling you what happened - you can look it up for yourself, anyway - it was widely reported at the time.

or is it faragesk to use the name of anyone's nationality now?

Got a touch of the paranoia about you there

Presumably the OP is merely recounting a news story which happened in their local area. Are we not allowed to mention anyone's nationality these days?

Back to the subject of aircraft - we had a Lancaster bomber fly over our house yesterday.

Bloodyhrt · 16/08/2025 21:46

I’ve never heard of it.

I shall google it but your assumption that people would know what you meant is clearly a bit off.

and it doesn’t help that you got the day of the boom wrong too.

Are you always so serious?!

I am autistic. As I have explained on further posts on this thread.

Yes we are. When it’s relevant. Which it’s not here - beyond trying to highlight the man ‘couldn’t read signs’

If she'd said he was Swedish, would you have the same reaction? I doubt it.

MagicaMagical · 17/08/2025 12:01

There’s no evidence this happened. According to the wiki page the site is monitored visually and by radar and no-one is allowed near it. There is no news story anywhere about a Pakistani fisherman somehow sailing up to it and clambering aboard it.

No, because being Swedish doesn’t tend to be used as a racist dog whistle does it

Good grief. I am super PC and ‘woke’ but stating that someone is from Pakistan just adds a bit of context to the tale. It tells us how and why the person ended up fishing off the masts of the SS Richard Montgomery.

The alarm was triggered because the bloke hadn’t heard of it and couldn’t read the signage and he accidentally put himself and others in danger. It’s very different to ‘local man loses bet and goes fishing off the masts after losing bet in pub’ even though ultimately, the same thing would be happening in both stories.

You must be hard work in real life.

MagicaMagical · 17/08/2025 12:08

This is the only documented person who went near it, a paddle boarder in 2015.

https://www.kentonline.co.uk/sheerness/news/anger-at-boarders-bomb-wreck-stunt-38288/

and when the photo loads - as you can see- no-one could ‘hop on it’ and fish, as said Pakistani man that couldn’t read signs did.

Anyone else get boomed today?
MagicaMagical · 17/08/2025 12:10

@Allthatwegotisthispalebluedot but it didn’t happen. So it’s a tale made up to ridicule someone who’s Pakistani, painting them as a bit thick, or stupid, or unintegrated as they can’t read English and therefore a danger to UK citizens.

LikeWhoUsesTypewritersAnyway · 16/08/2025 22:08

I thought people were talking about Montgomery in mid Wales, and that's not a million miles from me! Then again, even if it's 150 miles away, that's not terribly far when a jet is travelling 1500 to 1800pmh! As I said, it would be at Kent one minute, then over me within a few minutes.

Same.

It might be a fake story (I hadnt even heard of the ship before this mumsnet post tbh) but even in the article you posted it talks about a ‘queenborough-based Yacht master’. Pretty normal when telling a story to just say where the person is from. Like I said, adds context.

notimagain · 17/08/2025 12:18

YanTanTetheraPetheraBumfitt · 17/08/2025 12:14

Same.

If people want to do the sums Mach one is about 760 mph (it varies) , converts to about 12 miles a minute...

Yesterday's Typhoon will have been going a bit faster than that but can't see it doing. 1500 mph.

GeneralPeter · 17/08/2025 12:23

@MagicaMagical

That’s four levels of reach:
— that the event didn’t happen (rather than just not reported)
— that the PP made it up (rather than mistaken, if it didnt)
— that she did so to ridicule Pakistanis (rather than to explain why he might not know the local history)
— because she wanted to dog-whistle racists.

All in service of your message that we should be careful not to cast unfair aspersions on people, even in passing.

Every summer the Lanc flies over our house; usually a few times.
The sound it makes is unmistakable and it's beautiful to see it still flying.

Leafusbe · 17/08/2025 14:15

Our Lanc has a name too, it's "Vera" one of only two air- worthy Lancaster bombers in the world.
We're very proud to have it!

HonoriaBulstrode · 17/08/2025 14:58

The Lanc flying over was one of the best bits of the VE Day events.

I had the Battle of Britain flight flying low right over my house once, like my own personal flypast. They were doing a display nearby and this is where they turned round to go back for another run.

And down at the seaside once, standing at the end of the pier, a Spitfire flew past. They aways look so graceful and elegant in flight.

I was on an excursion down the Estuary once and our ship went as close as permitted to the Montgomery so people could take photos.

Another time, another excursion, we sailed round the Maunsell Forts. (Cue lots of people saying they've never heard of the Maunsell Forts.)

Longnightmoon · 16/08/2025 21:48

ah well, like I said, was up all night. If I see something in a post I have never heard of, I just look it up. It isn't something that bothers me.

well it bothered me in the childish “ I know something you don’t know” tone of your clever dick post - whether it bothers you or not, kindly don’t patronise, no one else does this, even having been up all night -

what @Bloodyhrt said - I’m not reading any more of this nonsense

itsgettingweird · 17/08/2025 15:44

there was one on Friday . A plane flying from France lost radio contact and fighter typhoons were deployed. There was a sonic boom heard over a lot of southern U.K.

We were already down the beach having gone for an ice cream and to watch the red arrows fly back to Bournemouth.

At least I’m sure it was Friday - I’m losing track of days this holiday 😆

Amazing, aren't they? the sound of those engines is totally unmistakable. We've had the Red Arrows and a Spitfire this year too.

Leafusbe · 17/08/2025 21:18

The Red Arrows flew over here last year, what an amazing sight; absolutely stunning!
However I have a special liking for the Lanc, and I was able to climb up inside it a couple of times, and see it from the inside.
That was years ago though, I don't know if that's allowed now.
However, I always go outside and watch it as it flies overhead.
