Any recommendations for online karate or other martial arts for nine year old boy

Looking for some short online videos. Haven’t done it before. Fit and good at other sports. Want to find a five to ten minute martial arts video to get calm and focused before school.

Nine year old boy. Will join him doing them. Hope to join a real class in the evenings but depends on others sports commitments.

Many thanks for any suggestions.

I wouldn’t advise doing a martial art online. It is really something that needs to be taught by experienced sensei. Karate is not really a calming activity and will get him wound up before school!

Maybe mindfulness or yoga? Something like that? Or meditation?

Something like tai chi might be better for calming and focus.

Agreed, you need to be taught by an experienced instructor, you don’t just watch someone throwing out a few side and turning kicks online and then try and copy, you need to be taught technique.

Okay thanks, understood.

Does anyone know any good Tai Chi videos for children? Not in the UK and very rural so a real life class is going to be 45 minutes plus each way and he already does a lot.

I'm not a teacher but have been practicing tai chi for over 20 years. I have had a quick look at YouTube at this seems to be what you are looking for.

As PPs have said, the eastern martial arts are not just something you do, you have to learn them over time, and with a full understanding of the principles behind them - like chi - and mastering the correct breathing is crucial. It took me over a year to get the breathing right, the same time to learn a short form routine and even longer to learn long form. You just cannot really learn this without going to a class.

The routine in my link is basically the preparation for a qigong session and it will get blood circulating and boost energy and concentration.

If this doesn't appeal to your DS, Joe Wicks has a series of quick wake up routines for children, which do the same thing but without quite the same spiritual element.
