Constipation- someone PLEASE help me

HelpMeMelpHe · 14/08/2025 20:12

I have been constipated for 7 days. That may not sound like a lot but I usually go 2/3 times a day without issue. I was away on holiday and ate crap food and basically survived on crisps and pizza as I was so hot I had no appetite.

I am currently lying on the bed in tears, I have tried:
orange juice
4 suppositories
3 x enemas
putting my feet up
relaxing
black coffee
a special vitamin tablet which DP says always makes him go
Drinking loads of water
pushing from inside my vagina
actually trying to manually remove the stool (sorry for the way TMI)
sitting in a warm bath
massaging my stomach
dulcolex

ill be ringing my GP first thing in the morning but can ANYONE suggest anything else. I’m in a total panic, I can just feel the rock hard stool, I’m in agony, shaking and it hurts to walk. To top it off I’m on my period which I hoped would get things going but nothing. Someone please help I am desperate and I’m worried my gp will just prescribe everything I’ve already tried. I’m a nurse and working all weekend and at this point I can’t see how I can go into work which would leave my team in the absolute shit (pardon the pun). I don’t know what to do 🫨🫨

I've been following this thread and hoping, for your sake, for some 'movement' by now.

I had a hysterectomy last year and became constipated. Partly the medication, partly the shock to he bowel after surgery and partly I was scared to push. Anyway, I needed to go but couldn't. I phoned the GP for advice on how to take the lactulose - I'd been advised to buy it, but wasn't sure on dosage etc, and I didn't want to overdo it. Anyway, his advice was 'No, don't take lactulose, you have Ileus, don't even think about going to the toilet until around day 7.' Well, I was already in a lot of discomfort, so by day 7 it would have most likely been impacted. Here's what I did (as advised by people who had been there!) I took the lactulose, 15ml starting dose. I think I had a strongish, sweet coffee too 🤔. I paced. I rocked my hips, side to side, back and forth (someone further up thread mentioned moving like you're hula hooping). I waited until I felt like it was in position, if you know what I mean, then I sat on the loo. Couldn't push, for obvious reasons, so had to do tiny little squeezes. I pressed on my bum cheeks either side and that created the squeezing motion I needed to get it out. Sorry if that's TMI, but it was the only way I was going that day. Good luck OP, keep us updated.

I once ate 2 packets of M&S sugar free butterscotch on a long train journey and experienced the worst explosive diarrhoea of my life in a railway station toilet at my destination. I had no idea about the laxative effect of the sweeteners. You could give some a try

This is why going to A and E is unlikely to help.
I've seen a lot of threads on here where severely impacted patients go to A and E in extreme distress. The doctors generally tell them to take more Movicol. They ignore the patient's desperation and pain and send them home.

This type of severe constipation needs to be tackled with a phosphate enema and probably a manual removal of faeces by an experienced nurse.

And I don't know why so many people are recommending suppositories. The OP stated several posts ago that she's tried several, with no result.

There are different types of suppositories though my son has chronic constipation, and glycerin suppositories are pretty useless imo, bisocodyl ones though usually work for my son ,it soften,s the faeces as well as giving the person the urge to go.

Actually compounds the problem for someone with slow transit constipation like myself. it just adds to the bulk that sits motionless in my system. 8 sachets of Laxido, anal irrigation and a litre or 2 of prune juice will work for me even when impacted.

Yes that's whst I'm saying.

Velmy · 15/08/2025 16:45

Can you get moviprep? Failing that, Abdul's Balti House for a vindaloo!

rubicustellitall · 15/08/2025 16:58

I was like this after giving birth in December. It's horrific, but one tip that might help - as I don't think anyone else has said it yet - raise your feet when on the toilet. Put your feet up on a stool or something so you're in more of a crouched position.

I can say this definitely helps. I have a stool I place my feet on when using for a poo, you need you knees higher than your hips. It does help. This is how it works:-

Overview

A Squatty Potty is a toilet stool that helps you poop more comfortably and effectively. It does this by positioning your body in a natural squatting posture, which helps to relax the puborectalis muscle and straighten the colon. This allows for a smoother, more complete bowel movement with less straining

A big fat line of coke used to work quite well for me.

When I was a drugs worker a lot of the heroin users would swear by a hit of crack to sort out the opiate induced constipation.

Icreatedausernameyippee · 15/08/2025 17:10

Lose all your dignity, stand up in the shower and get it out that way.
When I was pregnant and taking Iron I had the worst constipation of my life. Took me actual hours of misery to get it out and was the size of a newborn baby.
Gravity was the only thing that helped it once is was at the point of being lodged.

zeebra · 15/08/2025 17:21

I hope this doesnt offend the OP but I never imagined I would go out for the day and the first thing I do when I get home is not put the kettle on or pour myself a drink but look in Mumsnet to see if a stranger to me has had a pooh. (forgive me if this offends- I don;t mean it to)!

BubblyBath178 · 15/08/2025 17:21

Have you tried prunes or prune juice? My grandad used to swear by castor oil but I’ve never tried it myself.

Prunes are very good to keep you 'regular' and to help with mild constipation but impacted faeces is very very different condition and can become a medical emergency

BeesUnicornPot · 15/08/2025 17:32

Can someone let me know if the OP has had a poo?

I’ve experienced awful constipation and it was like birthing a baby when it eventually came 😬

I’m far too invested in this 😬

OhHellolittleone · 15/08/2025 14:45

@HelpMeMelpHe i hope you get it sorted.

I had awful constipation after my first baby. GP did something up my bum and sent me home - quickly- and it alll came out. How hideous you think… I see this man every day now as our children are now in the same class, I can barely look at him.

He's never going to remember. GPs are busy seeing more patients than they have time for.

Poppingby · 15/08/2025 17:38

There was a point that I would have married this guy. Might help someone else even if your problem is too far advanced for exercises.

this sounds awful OP - have you tried some gentle yoga?

Yogi squats are great - if you can hang out in a squat for a while try it. Get into the postion, get as comfy as possible & just breathe
s

try these too - gently - or have a google "yoga for constipation"

I’ve just got home from the gp, she wasn’t concerned about impaction in the slightest. She has prescribed me laxido and told me to take 4-8 (I think I’ll take 6?) and some more suppositories. She examined me and said she couldn’t feel a hard stool but I didn’t ask whether she meant there was nothing there (although I can feel it so can’t be empty) or that the stool was now soft. She also said I now have piles which is a pain but not unexpected. She said to start these and if nothing by next week to come back.

I can really empathise with you.

My only concern is that you get in for an ultrasound. I knew someone who had constipation so bad she went to hospital and it was discovered she had a tumour on her ovary. She said she was in so much pain she wasn’t even embarrassed about getting an enema. She obviously had surgery to remove it.

RaspberryArcadia · 15/08/2025 17:47

Another vote for magnesium citrate. I take four when constipated and things move very quickly! Nothing else seems to work for me .

Bathingforest · 15/08/2025 17:49

Half a bottle of laxative. Then never again bready stuff only, lol. Or buy a squash, prune juice and all that.

Mmhmmn · 15/08/2025 17:49

Don't push from the vag.
Although it will feel impossible, exercising would help move it along - a long vigorous walk. Several mugs of hot tea (coffee's just going to make you more anxious at this stage). And squat. After your walk.

FrenchBob · 15/08/2025 17:50

Double espresso and a cigarette

Bathingforest · 15/08/2025 17:50

squash as in pumpkin. A large boiled pumpkin will do the job
