HelpMeMelpHe · 14/08/2025 20:12

I have been constipated for 7 days. That may not sound like a lot but I usually go 2/3 times a day without issue. I was away on holiday and ate crap food and basically survived on crisps and pizza as I was so hot I had no appetite.

I am currently lying on the bed in tears, I have tried:
orange juice
4 suppositories
3 x enemas
putting my feet up
relaxing
black coffee
a special vitamin tablet which DP says always makes him go
Drinking loads of water
pushing from inside my vagina
actually trying to manually remove the stool (sorry for the way TMI)
sitting in a warm bath
massaging my stomach
dulcolex

ill be ringing my GP first thing in the morning but can ANYONE suggest anything else. I’m in a total panic, I can just feel the rock hard stool, I’m in agony, shaking and it hurts to walk. To top it off I’m on my period which I hoped would get things going but nothing. Someone please help I am desperate and I’m worried my gp will just prescribe everything I’ve already tried. I’m a nurse and working all weekend and at this point I can’t see how I can go into work which would leave my team in the absolute shit (pardon the pun). I don’t know what to do 🫨🫨

One time I had constipation so bad I had an emergency scan just to see a massive poop in my bowel. They had to check that me going to the bathroom wasn’t going to perforate my bowel.

I drank pico salax (also called pico prep) which is something you take before bowel surgery.

Another time (after I had a c-section) no amounts of movicol could make me poop. I had my partner go out and get me IKEA meatballs because the preservatives in those meatballs always make me poop. It worked.

JustMyView13 · 15/08/2025 04:56

A consultant once announced - he challenges anyone to say they’re constipated drinking prune juice.
Also, try movicol - you can do 8 sachets into a litre (read the package) to clear a blockage or just 3 times per day for constipation. It’s good stuff.

JillyGiraffe · 15/08/2025 05:06

If the GP suggests prunes, make sure you have at least half a tin at a time!

Double dose of Dulcolax worked for me but boy oh boy did it make me fell ill! Desperate measures but never again.

Hope you manage to shift it soon OP.

I took two dulcolax a day for a week post surgery and nothing happened! Maybe I got a dud packet 😂

I have suffered from constipation on and off for most of my life, but it became particularly chronic a couple of years ago when I was hardly able to pass anything without tremendous effort and pain. On my GPs advice I began taking Movicole/Molaxole sachets each day and these did help keep me regular. When I was pregnant last year I was worried that the laxative medication might harm my baby so I foolishly stopped taking it which led to absolutely appalling constipation which nothing could shift. I was in a great deal of pain, couldn't sit, stand or walk comfortably and didn't want to eat aas I felt so full and bloated. I have tried every natural remedy known to man, nothing made a difference. In the end, my GP prescribed me a three-day large dose of Movicole, four sachets on day one, 6 on day two and 8 on day three, which mercifully did the trick, I suspect this is what your GP will advise too.
I was advised that Lactulose is routinely used in pregnancy so I started taking that daily but it didn't make much difference to me on its own. At about 20 weeks pregnant, having battled constant severe constipation throughout my pregnancy, a consultant advised me to take two sachets of Movicole and two doses of Lactulose daily, neither of which they assured me entered the bloodstream and so would not harm my baby. I have been doing this ever since and, touch wood, I have been fine since, both throughout the rest of my pregnancy and during and post birth, which has been a relief. I did develop piles during pregnancy, as a result of the constipation, which bled and gave me a terrible scare as, when I first found blood on the sheets, I was terrified it was connected to my pregnancy. Just worth keeping an eye out for as it's better to get cream for them early rather than let than thrombose as mine did. Good luck, I know how excruciating constipation can be!

Micralax enema, think you need a prescription, to clear the impacted stool. Sympathies, @HelpMeMelpHe , happened to me, was horrendous

taxidriver · 15/08/2025 05:59

as a community nurse you should know your health is more important than work op,
dont delay a GP visit

Glitterblue · 15/08/2025 06:03

I was horribly constipated last year after surgery when I was on a lot of opiates, I’ll never forget how uncomfortable it was or that feeling of sheer panic. The laxatives that they sent me home with did nothing other than a tiny bit of watery stuff (sorry, TMI!) My pharmacist friend told me to take Lactulose and drink a LOT of water, and that did the trick within a couple of hours. I have never been so relieved!

OverlyFragrant · 15/08/2025 06:11

Magnesium citrate.

But lactulose always works for me.

Second this! Worked amazingly after my C-Section and 7 days of not going.

olympicsrock · 15/08/2025 06:51

Get yourself some medical help today please. Having such hard impacted stool
is incredibly dangerous. As a surgeon I have seen a number of patients burst their bowel this way . They end up with a colostomy and the expected mortality risk when this happens is 50% .
Sorry to scare you but you do need to take this seriously.

OverlyFragrant · 15/08/2025 06:11

Magnesium citrate.

I second this. It does work.

GAJLY · 15/08/2025 07:09

Hope you feel better soon.

Laxido sachets.

Seconded

user1476613140 · 15/08/2025 07:21

I take lactulose regularly due to painkillers that cause constipation so I know how brilliantly it works 😀

MrsDoubtfire1 · 15/08/2025 07:23

Get yourself down to A & E. As a nurse you will know that complications can ensue. Good luck!

Thulpelly · 15/08/2025 07:27

If you’re not farting go to the doctors.

Lifeinthepit · 15/08/2025 07:29

I haven't RTFT so don't know if this has been suggested but Epsom Salts are guaranteed to work. They are absolutely minging (don't drink the lavender ones like I did) but will work within 30 mins. 3 teaspoons dissolved in warm water then add cold water and squash maybe. Down the hatch and make sure you are near a loo. Drink plenty of water before and during.

LunaDeBallona · 15/08/2025 07:32

Bateson · 14/08/2025 22:10

Is LunaDeBallona HelpMeHelpMe posting under another name? Can’t believe people are falling for for this. No way would a trained Community Nurse be needing to seek advice regarding constipation on Mumsnet.

What are you going on about?
Do you think I’m the OP.?
If you have an issue report the OP rather than picking on random posters who are trying to help and accusing them. Thats just nasty.
I simply described exactly what I had to do several years ago when I was ill and got horribly constipated with the drugs I had to take - is that ok with you??

That's very interesting info about the IKEA meatballs. They used to always make my son vomit so I wonder what's in them...

PulchritudinousLycanthrope · 15/08/2025 07:43

Saline enema? The longer stuff is in your large intestine, the more water is extracted making the constipation worse. That is what the LI does, It removes fluid and recycles it back to the blood stream. A saline enema will osmotically reverse that, bringing fluid back into your LI and allow the lot to move again.

OP you might need several different things to get it all going but don't leave it. The stretching of your LI can lead to loss of function to your colon. If you don't move soon, go to A & E today. Don't leave it any longer.

Francestein · 15/08/2025 07:47

Don’t add fibre. You probably have an impacted bowel. I would recommend going to A&E (I know) because you need to rule out physical reasons for this. (Gut motility, etc). I would recommend a bisocodyl suppository, and bisocodyl drops or tablets, plus lactulose. I am not sure working is a grand idea with all of that on board.

Flat, full sugar Coke is the advice given on UK Colostomy site.
