Almost 56 and still having periods. Anyone older than me?

I really want them to stop. Did anyone on here go for this long?

loveyouradvice · 13/08/2025 09:18

Yes until I was a 59 and a friend of mine went on a bit longer than that

IamSmarticus · 13/08/2025 09:21

Nearly 57 and had one a couple months ago - very infrequent now but definitely not stopped completely.

blobby10 · 13/08/2025 09:23

I'm 56 already and still having regular ones. Having my coil taken out soon as its been in for 8 years but someone mentioned that may be keeping things going. Can't see how tbh but yes, @its5oclocksomewheresurely I wish mine would just stop too! On the plus side, I'm not experiencing any horrendous peri issues and haven't gone onto HRT. Grin

Squirrelsnut · 13/08/2025 09:25

I'm 'only' 55 and irrationally furious that I'm still experiencing cramps, mess and inconvenience every.sodding.month.
40 years!

civetcat · 13/08/2025 09:26

Yes, until 59. Regular, heavy, then stopped suddenly. Bliss when they finally stopped

johnworf · 13/08/2025 09:31

Regular until 56 then they just stopped. Had a slight bleed 18 months later and had a hysteroscopy. All was fine.

Cynic17 · 13/08/2025 09:41

Mine were "occasional" for many years, then started again at 48 and went on until 56.
Yes, it's incredibly annoying, but hopefully, OP, you're close to the end.

I do also wonder whether it's actually good news, because many of us "late finishers" have no other menopause symptoms, and no need for HRT.

its5oclocksomewheresurely · 13/08/2025 09:50

Oh blimey!! I was really hoping I was an outlier meaning I would be finishing soon! Gah!

I've never heard this before! I'm not on HRT. My symptoms haven't been too bad.

I'm in agony. Hardly slept at all last night. Current period is now on day 14.

I’m almost 56 and have had no periods for 3 months. Can’t quite believe it. Hope this will be you too soon OP.

Id actually be quite pleased with it.

Now that everyone seems to be "peri" and having symptoms from about 37, it's nice to see the otherside.

At least no menopause symptoms until much later on.

EmiliaRuusuvuori · 13/08/2025 09:59

I'm 54 and still have regular periods. My Mum and Auntie were about 58 and their Mum was 60.
Just hoping I won't have to wait that long but think I probably will.

Fairyvocals · 13/08/2025 10:01

Oh, bloody hell. I’m 54 and still having them. I was thinking that surely I must be nearly done, but apparently not. Sob!

LookingForwardToMyCutAndColour · 13/08/2025 10:04

Almost 53 and still having them although my cycle has gone from 35 days to 28 days.

Currently got a headache and cramps. Started them at 12.

I'm sure I read somewhere though that the longer you have them the better it is for your health/ageing.

This is my totally unscientific theory too! Mine went on until I was 58 (sorry OP) but I have had no awful symptoms and have had no need for HRT. I was delighted when they stopped though.

Catsandcannedbeans · 13/08/2025 10:24

My mum had them till 60. Once said she was having PMS at 55 and I said “are you not old for that” and oh my god… hell hath no fury.

kentgardens · 13/08/2025 10:26

I was 57 and went from regular to a sudden stop. And like others very few symptoms. But I had always put that down to stopping alcohol for a few years.

I'm 53 (which is young compared to some of you!) but I've had horrendous peri symptoms, which thankfully are mostly resolved with HRT.

But maybe it's good news if you've got to an older age without any symptoms so far?

SabrinaThwaite · 13/08/2025 10:31

I was 57 and still having regular periods, but was getting hot flushes, insomnia and awful anxiety so went onto HRT, which resolved all the issues.

TheFormidableMrsC · 13/08/2025 10:32

My periods stopped when I had chemo and started Tamoxifen as part of my breast cancer treatment. I’m going to be 56 shortly, yet I still get the whole cycle, the bloating, mild period pain, the PMT. I no longer get very sore boobs, I presume because of the medication but I do get some slight discomfort. It follows the same pattern as my pre cancer periods. So I think had my cancer not happened, I’d still be having periods. I am grateful for not bleeding but it’s still annoying!

MrsEmmelinePankhurst · 13/08/2025 10:33

Excuse my French but bloody hell. I can’t believe so many people have periods for so long; I’m desperate for them to stop. I’m 53, still have horrific heavy painful periods (roughly every 23 days) preceded each month by several days of PMDD where I’m so depressed that I fantasise about ending my life, and I have been “peri” for 10 years with awful migraine auras, joint pain, insomnia and other weird & wonderful symptoms. Been on HRT for 3 years but I don’t think it helps, and can only use transdermal due to the migraines (which are caused by my blasted oestrogen levels in the first place presumably, as they only started when I was 43). Started my periods at 11, so I’ve had 42 years of this bullshit and there’s still no end in sight. I wish @Cynic17 was right about late finishers not having menopause symptoms but, in my case, sadly not 😢

Gahhhhhh.

StressedEric · 13/08/2025 10:55

Mine were horrific and regular until I started mounjaro last September age 55, I had my last “proper” cramps etc period in January and have had only one mild and light cycle in June this year . My working/ cobbled together off Dr Google theory is that my excess fat caused increased oestrogen which kept my periods going . now I’m 7 stone down and merely slightly obese rather than about to star in My 600lb life , my oestrogen has fallen hence my periods have stopped .
this has been the absolute best side effect of mounjaro as I was not able to leave the house or the sofa for 2 days a month .

SirChenjins · 13/08/2025 10:57

I'm 56 and a half - my last period was 4 months ago after several which lasted weeks and looked like I was expelling my complete innards. I'm hoping to all the gods that this is me finally in menopause.

Arraminta · 13/08/2025 11:03

I'm nearly 55 and still bloody having regular periods. Even taking bloody Tamoxifen for over 3 years didn't stop them FFS.

The cramps and bleeding aren't too bad, but every few months I still get the most horrible PMS, low mood symptoms which can last 20 days!

HopingForTheBest25 · 13/08/2025 11:06

I also think this might be a good thing - I'm 51, on HRT and supposed to get a monthly bleed on this regime, but my body is overriding it and I'm now missing some periods, while still getting the cramps and general discomfort! I've had period symptoms for the last 3 weeks and no bleed or end in sight.

It's horrible going to work and worrying about getting flooding after a long cycle and a missed bleed. So there's something to ge said for regular periods and a predictable cycle, particularly when you still have to go to work.
