Almost 56 and still having periods. Anyone older than me?

I really want them to stop. Did anyone on here go for this long?

My DSis is 63 and still having regular periods! Her GP told her she is the oldest woman they have had at their practice still having periods. She is having dreadful hot flushes and is feeling quite drained by it now. GP is suggesting HRT now.

This is horrendous. Your poor sister.

harrysally · 13/08/2025 12:03

I was still having regular periods until I was 56
I then had a hysterectomy (not linked to periods) it was the best thing I have ever done. I think I would still be having them now five years later 😉

HostaCentral · 13/08/2025 12:09

59, just had another after 6 months break from HRT, so still going "naturally". I know I am still having cycles, as I get all the symptoms, if not necessarily a bleed.

I was still super regular before going on HRT at 55. HRT obviously messed about with that a bit, as it didn't match my own cycles. Just before I decided to come off, I was irregular, so thought lets see how I am off it. Lo and behold just had a normal cycle of heat, boobs, and followed by a period. Humph.

Goinghome25 · 13/08/2025 12:25

Nearly 58 here and theyve just returned.

Went on HRT. The Mirena/oestrrogel combo in Jan 2024 and they stopped around April 2024.

Started Mounjaro in Dec 2024 stopped oestrogel and lost 3 st.

My periods have just come back! Went for blood tests last month and it came back that I am not yet post meno!!

Goinghome25 · 13/08/2025 12:26

On the plus side there is less chance of oestoporosis

Freysimo · 13/08/2025 12:29

You poor things. I started periods at 14, finished by 50, no menopause symptoms.

lucky you

Squirrelsnut · 13/08/2025 13:25

I hope this isn't patronising but some posters seem to think HRT stops periods. Sadly no. I've been on it for 2 years and still have a 'normal' cycle.

InNewYorkNoShoes · 13/08/2025 13:28

Crikey. I have a feeling I will have periods until an older age too. I am guessing this means contraception is necessary!

TheProvincialLady · 13/08/2025 13:32

My mum was still going strong at 57 when she had a hysterectomy so I’m expecting to be having periods for a while yet.

Is there a correlation with youthful appearance?

RainBow725 · 13/08/2025 13:34

Solidarity. I am 55 and still having regular periods. I mean they’re all over the place. Some early, some late, heavy, light, pain, no pain etc but not really skipped any as yet. Plenty of perimenopause symptoms for 6-7 years but constantly changing, which has put me off trying HRT. Definitely had enough now.

BitOutOfPractice · 13/08/2025 13:34

Me. 58! Sick to the back teeth of them.

Imagine the expression on my face when a male doctor asked me “why do you want your periods to stop?” 🙄

JaninaDuszejko · 13/08/2025 13:35

I do also wonder whether it's actually good news, because many of us "late finishers" have no other menopause symptoms, and no need for HRT.

My Mum had her last period at 55 and had a very straightforward menopause. I'm 54 and last had a period this spring (very exciting, until about 9 months ago I was completely regular) but have had no annoying menopause symptoms at all yet.

Fairyvocals · 13/08/2025 10:01

Oh, bloody hell. I’m 54 and still having them. I was thinking that surely I must be nearly done, but apparently not. Sob!

Me too! 😓😵‍💫😓

God I could cry for her. Please send her a sisterly arm stroke of sympathy from me. Poor woman.

Based on my Mum absolutely.

More scientifically, there's a link between having children in your 40s and living into your 100s which suggests there is a protective factor to late menopause.

TheAutumnCrow · 13/08/2025 13:40

I was 57 and still having (awful) periods. My consultant gynae for reasons of research curiosity did an FSH test and it was 13. Fertile.

Anyway I had bigger problems and had to have a BSO total hysterectomy, so that stopped everything.

I'm in agony. Hardly slept at all last night. Current period is now on day 14.

That’s a sign you’re near the end OP. It’s good news so hang in there.

I had a three weeker aged 57 and then …. nothing. Apart from the odd hot flush that was it.

If your periods are lasting this long you may want to get checked out by a doctor. My mum went through something similar to this and ended up having to have a hysterectomy.

siliconcover · 13/08/2025 14:08

Mine ended 'overnight' in 2023 when I was 55 regular as clockwork since age 10 (young male GP recently asked me about it. When I told him he scoffed & asked 'was I sure'. I said Yes, that was the spring my mother & partner both passed from cancer within 8 weeks of each other. Not likely to forget)

TuesdaysAreBest · 13/08/2025 14:56

59, my gp said it was unusual but within normal limits.

MiddlingMarch · 13/08/2025 15:04

Oh, I wish they could just STOP. I'd be quite keen for some sort of vacuum style device to be created that would just "shhhhhhhhppppppt" out the relevant part of my innards so I don't have to have them any more.

And I'm only (just) 45. Have been on HRT for a year. Periods started at 14, cycle was 6wks long, periods heavy. Ive had enough of them. To think there could be another decade of this... no. No. Where's the hoover...

Cantbearsedtothinkofausername · 13/08/2025 15:21

I'm late 40's thought I was peri as i had lots of peri symptoms but actually turned out to be anemia caused by..... yep bastard periods! Cycle has gone down to 29 days from 31 and still regular and the last one was slighlty longer at 12 days as opposed to the usual 7/8
Currently much worse at night for some reason. With only 4 hours sleep last night and 3 bouts of flooding 😭 am thoroughly fed up of them and wish they'd just piss off.

TuesdaysAreBest · 13/08/2025 15:39

Mirena coils are great for flooding and heavy periods. I had two consecutively in the years leading up to the end point. Saved my sanity.
