Words and phrases that piss you off for no good reason

I’ll start.

“fair do’s”
”cool beans”
”loaded up on”
”bliss”

there’s so many more. I’ve no reason they annoy me so much but hearing these words evokes violent thoughts 😂

“You’ve got this”

i hate this saying with a passion.

pontivex · 31/08/2025 13:55

This is probably more pedantry over spelling than words that piss you off but I am ENRAGED by ‘sneak peak’.

I think you mean "sneak peek".

Haha! That’s evidence of how annoying it is! Literally the words I’m dying to say whenever I see it!

Ugh at ‘this one’

ELS20 · 01/09/2025 06:16

”Let’s do” or “”I’m gonna do”. For example when ordering food “I’m gonna do the Caesar salad” instead of “Please can I have the Caesar salad”

ELS20 · 01/09/2025 06:21

“Eats” as a noun
Lippy (lipstick)
Hubby
Crimbo
Hollibobs

riversflows · 01/09/2025 06:27

Per say instead of per se

riversflows · 01/09/2025 06:28

pre-plan, pre-warn etc. using pre when it’s not needed.

It's so often misspelt as "sneak peak" though! 🤮

SchnizelVonKrumm · 01/09/2025 06:42

I will add:

"Yay or nay". The expression is "yea or nay".

People who go out of their way to avoid using the word "children" (so, little people, little ones, littles etc etc)

I also really cringe for some reason at the expression "the likes of", as in "we like to shop at the likes of M&S, Next etc". For some reason it comes across (to me) as really pretentious.

Oh and "lux"/"luxe". When I see the word I imagine a grey crushed velvet sofa and those mirrored chests of drawers.

Picky bits = bowls of scabs and dandruff.

Passed for died - so twee and unclear, my first thought is ‘passed what?’. Passed away is bad enough but ‘passed’ is awful, I hope it doesn’t creep into usage in professional settings.

My bad

Baby father 🤮

We was sat - gahhhhh!

And ‘outwith’, sorry Scotland but it is spreading beyond your borders and sounds like business jargon spoken by anyone else.

Can I get… - rude.

’Eats’ as a noun.

Ezackly

Hundred percent (at least say one hundred percent).

Lay - as in ‘go and lay down’.

IMissSparkling · 01/09/2025 06:48

The "ber months" - feck off, you mean autumn (plus December).

Oh god this one is awful, so twee. I need to write about death quite a lot in my work and always correct my trainees if they use this word in correspondence, and explain that it's because we should avoid euphemisms. (I would ofc never say anything if someone was talking about the death if someone they loved, FAOD).

This has made me think of an even worse one though "passed over the rainbow bridge" 🤮

bloominoreilly · 01/09/2025 10:39

'Happy days!' 🤮 But thankfully seems to be dying off

'Top banana' was another hated one, but that one's pretty much become become extinct, thank God
