Words and phrases that piss you off for no good reason

I’ll start.

“fair do’s”
”cool beans”
”loaded up on”
”bliss”

there’s so many more. I’ve no reason they annoy me so much but hearing these words evokes violent thoughts 😂

*Moist
*Quiche
*That's my go to
*Touch base
I had someone write "prudent" in an email today....*shudders

“I hear you”

I would prefer if they were listening to what I was saying

also “decimated” as I prefer the original meaning and think we might try bringing it back for certain public servants.

“Chefs kiss” I feel like everyone has started using it recently and it annoys me. Not in real life but heard it a lot on social media.

I also really don’t like “awesome”. First heard it when we went to Florida many yrs ago and it’s just so American to me. When it became popular here I was like 😡 it pissed me off! I think popularity has died down for it now though thankfully.

Hate awesome! And most other americanisms

"Gifted".
"To be fair".
"See/know what I mean?".
"Like" - used as a filler in every sentence.
"Sat" or "Stood" incorrectly used as a present tense verb.
Any 'double negative', 'glottal stop' or dropped 'aitch'.
Aitch pronounced as "haitch".
"Ain't" instead of "isn't".
"It don't" instead of "it doesn't" and similar tortured and nonsensical abuse of the English language.
So, so many - all synonymous with finger nails down a blackboard, but I have autism and poor speech is one of the things which cause me sensory overload!

Agree with all of these

“I reached out to”

No. You bloody didn’t. You spoke to them.

Omg I had a friend who was terrible for this. “I reached out to this guy about XYZ project” DAILY!!! Always said with the most smug smirk!

Fur baby

SaulHudsonDavidJones · 12/08/2025 23:17

Having a ‘cheeky’ whatever (drink/nap/pizza etc). Like ooooohhh, you’re such a rebel! 🙄

RaraRachael · 12/08/2025 23:20

Here we go again with the "Can I get" supposed Americanism.

Come to Scotland and it's the norm for asking for things in shops.

"Please may I have" - they'd look at me and probably laugh.

My pet hates -
Creative juices
You do you
I was today years old ......
Tell me you're XYZ without telling me you're XYZ

Admittedly the last 2 only ever seen on MN

Funnywonder · 12/08/2025 23:20

’First post nails it’. Always winds me up.

I hate when someone says they ‘adore’ something or someone.

The word ‘vile.’

Stichintime · 12/08/2025 23:20

At the end of the day... What, the sun goes down? Job done... Ah, if it was only that simple. My bad... Your bad what? Just say my mistake or I forgot!

LeonardoAcropolis · 12/08/2025 23:22

I'm seeing "unalived" instead of died on social media. Dreadful.

To be fair that's because posts get removed if you say "died by suicide" or" killed"

This one really pisses me off in any context, seen in a jumper advert....you'll reach for this jumper time and time again! No I won't I'll be wearing it time and time again.

Same in NI. ‘Can I get’ is completely acceptable here. In fact it might be the law. ‘Please may I have’ would mark you out as a pretentious weirdo🤣

pinkpony88 · 12/08/2025 23:31

110% 🫣

Kakibob1924 · 12/08/2025 23:31

Sorry for my ignorance, but why?

LilacPony · 12/08/2025 23:32

I don’t know why but “veggies” makes me hurl. Even more so when it’s used in an actual menu at a restaurant. Rage.

Gettingbysomehow · 12/08/2025 23:33

I was sat.
I had a lay in.....laying eggs?

I totally agree with you. And 'undies' instead of underwear. I had a lot of Australian friends and that was normal for them!

Back in the UK - a cafe I go to a lot has just changed its menus and they now called baked potatoes 'jacky spuds' and sandwiches 'sarnies'. I LOATH it. And it confuses a lot of elderly people and those who have English as a second language.

ChicJoker · 12/08/2025 23:12

Agree with all of these

Sadly someone close to me is guilty of all these 'sins' and my visceral reaction is becoming more obvious and difficult to camouflage!!

Or, even worse, "I was led in bed until..."

thishouseisashittip · 12/08/2025 23:37

"Life changing'! 😩
"AMAZING" 🤢 (so over used at work🤦🏻‍♀️!)
