When does the whining stop?!

My daughter is 4 and it feels like she’s been whining since she was born. I’m not sure she’s even particularly whiny, I just find it very grating!

When does it stop?!

Argh. My daughter is almost five and she still whines. Now my 2-yr-old DS has started too.

Absolute whinefest.

Cedrabbage · 12/08/2025 19:05

At about 17/18

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 12/08/2025 19:06

I never could stand whining. I made it very clear to dds that unless they talked properly, I was stone deaf. IMO you will have to ignore her unless she talks properly - it’s just a very irritating habit but easy enough to break. The dd of some friends of ours was always whining - luckily we didn’t see them very often!

When they leave home. You’ve got a while yet.

Crunchymum · 12/08/2025 19:11

Just made mine all come home from the allotment as they were all whining in unison. They are 12, 10 and 7.

(And despite the allotment sounding boring they usually all love it)

GoodVibesHere · 12/08/2025 19:20

It never stops

Cutleryclaire · 12/08/2025 19:22

6 and 7 has been a definite ramp up in whining for me. Why ask a normal question in a normal voice when you can whinge it out like a complaint instead?!

BlueRin5eBrigade · 12/08/2025 19:23

Never. It's part of her personality.

LighthouseTeaCup · 12/08/2025 19:39

I was deaf to whining. Couldn't understand what they were saying. They stopped - I don't know when - 3/4/5 ish.

Fight the good fight! Stand strong! Never give in!

This!
When they learn whining gets nothing and speaking nicely gets what you want!

QuaverQuanta · 12/08/2025 19:42

Mine is 6 and at this rate, won't be making it to 7!

Motherofalittledragon · 12/08/2025 19:43

Judging by 7 year old I’m guessing when they’re an adult, she shows no sign of dialling down the whinging!

Skybluepinky · 12/08/2025 19:58

When you acquire the parenting skills to stop her around you.

ChaiLatteCarrie · 12/08/2025 21:21

Cheerfully say "I'm sorry I don't speak whinge!" and then listen attentively when they use a nice normal voice. Stopped our kids whining by about age 5 this way.

SleeplessInWherever · 12/08/2025 21:24

Whiney (autistic) nearly 9 year old here.

He’s recently started making the most horrendous whinge noise, no actual tears, sometimes just because the sky is blue. He also fake cries.

I think it will end.. never. You have my condolences!

babylone · 12/08/2025 21:28

My 16yo is still a whinger but it is so much better! Now he’ll complain for a couple of minutes and moves on. It is fine. I used to say he came out crying and hasnt stopped, but it has!

GreatTheCat · 12/08/2025 21:28

My 2 son had a massive whinge on him. Seriously, he was about 13/14 when it died down.

LizzieSiddal · 12/08/2025 21:44

Like others I used to pretend I couldn’t understand a winey voice. Id tell them I didn’t understand so could they come back when they could speak in their normal voice. It works!

askmenothing · 12/08/2025 21:47

Mine is 13, I’ll let you know…

coxesorangepippin · 12/08/2025 21:49

8 years old

Good luck

mambojambodothetango · 12/08/2025 21:49

Zero tolerance for it in our house. They might have tried it once but never again.

Wallywobbles · 12/08/2025 21:52

Never had this. I have no patience for the whiner. They never tried it.

Mine is also autistic, so with the whinge we also get the same 1 or 2 phrases on an echolalic loop 😣 He has also managed on more than one occasion to literally have an argument with himself, which I think is actually quite a talent!
