My quilt cover has a mind of its own

I have just changed the sheets on my bed.

Why is it that whatever I do,short of using a staple gun,my king size quilt cover never fits properly? I am always left with an excess of quilt at the head end.

I have tried pegs, various shaking methods and having 2 of us hold the quilt in place. Nothing bloody works. I'm always left with that annoying flap of excess quilt at the top.

Anyone else? All tips gratefully received.

Put the duvet on the bed ‘sideways’ then put the cover on as normal!

so the long edge of the duvet goes across the bed, rather than from head to feet.

Somebody on here recommended these and they are brilliant

I've tried the sideways method. It didn't seem to improve things much.
I've not seen those clips before. I'll give them a try.

Honestly they are so good. I absolutely hate a migrating duvet but these are great. I use one at each corner. DS is very happy too - he’s a big boy and changes his own quilt cover. One thing I’ve done right as a mother. 😂

You've got the quilt on the wrong way round if it's a KS and you have excess cover at the head.

The longest length goes across the bed, not running headboard to feet. Put it in your duvet cover that way round.

G5000 · 10/08/2025 13:08

king size is more wide than long. I also suspect you are trying to put the quilt into the cover wrong way around - turn it 90 degrees and try again. Check that the longest side of cover matches up with longest side of quilt.

What long edge? Mine is square

slightlydistrac · 10/08/2025 14:00

Don't use fabric conditioner on that duvet cover. It is too smooth. You need a bit of friction between it and the duvet to keep it in place.

Chemenger · 10/08/2025 14:05

Have you tried the burrito method? I can’t explain it here but google it; there are videos.

Coverless duvet? That's my answer to all duvet troubles.

Kind size duvets are not quite square, they are 220x225 so the posters advising to turn it 90 degrees are correct. After years of having the same frustration, my cover and quite now fit!

Oh, sneaky 5cm eh?

Ive realised mine has a label on the bottom so I think Im doing mine the right way in the cover without realising it had a longer edge on one side.

Me too though a king size wo t fit into my washing machine. I have two large singles. Love them! Life changer.

RandomMess · 10/08/2025 15:05

I just use sheet, duvet, throw. Much easier.

I have a bigger washing machine - and a tumble dryer that a king size fits in for bad weather weeks. That said I am not a girl for huge TOG ratings even in the depths of winter. If it gets really cold I tend to layer - warm sheet, duvet, quilted throw. But that is only a very few days in the year.

Are your duvet and cover from the same place? Eg IKEA duvets and cover sizes are all different to standard sizes in the UK.
I found that out the hard way!
So if your cover is from IKEA (for example) but your duvet is from Dunelm (for example), then they may genuinely be different sizes and will never fit.

God no!! Everything is from all over the place. I sort of assumed king size is standard. Nieve?

Oh yes IKEA covers, never fit right

birdling · 10/08/2025 21:34

Many are the same size, but IKEA uses completely random sizing. (Possibly Swedish standard sizes, I'm not sure).
