So many spiders

I recently moved into my first home. A fixer-upper two bed 1970s semi detached bungalow on the outskirts of suburbia. Previously I lived in a second floor town centre Edwardian flat conversion.

I have seen more spiders in my home in the past 24 hours than I did in my flat in the eight years that I lived there. It’s been like this since I moved in - I’ve been here five months now and I’ve never seen so many in one place.

Fortunately I’m not afraid of spiders and generally have a live and let live attitude but I’m clearing webs away daily from ceilings and houseplants. They’re over the book cases in lampshades. They’re everywhere.

I cleaned the gutters yesterday (single storey living makes maintenance so easy!) and the roof tiles were festooned with them, from top to bottom.

I would give the spiders a pass if they weren’t making my home look like a Hallowe’en haunted house. I cleared a load yesterday and they’re already back draped over the lamp in the spare room.

The garage is breathtaking in its spideryness. I’m cautious moving anything in there now in case I disturb the gigantic ones which rule that space.

I have a mature shrub filled back and front garden with trees and an allotment behind. It’s a well built and well ventilated house - vents, air bricks, floorboards. No mould or damp thanks to this but I suspect it’s a welcome mat to the eight-legged house invaders.

I’ve just had the 1970s aluminium and wooden framed windows replaced which were full of gaps so I’m hoping that helps but does anyone have any tips? Do any of the repellents actually work? Are there certain ones I should keep? I see some of them eating their brethren so presumably that sort I should welcome.

I’m not looking to kill the little buggers I’d just like far, far fewer of them!

Are you sure you don’t have an infestation? Can happen with older houses, particularly if they’ve been empty for any period of time. I’d have a pest control company come and take a look personally.
