Ive found some other threads on these schools but was wondering if anyone had any current views.

DS due to start next year. We could potentially get in to both. But we’re stuck. My basic (and admittedly probably very ignorant ) preconceptions of the are….

Fortismere
Pros
-great grounds
-good results
-less “fighty” ??

cons
lack of uniform
drug problem??
less structured

HWS
pros
-more local
-uniform

cons
Greater social issues??

a friends son is currently at hw and has terrified me with stories of year 9s taking ketamine, knives and vaping. Is anyone able to give a more reasoned and calm view of both? I feel like we’re in that slightly madly anxious stage before having to do out school admissions, and just need a bit of help!!

thank you so much

I live up the road from Fortismere and know lots of children who went there and did very well, not just from an educational point of view, but also socially and emotionally. All schools have drug issues, in Private/posher ones it is the parents valium and the kids are made to keep quiet about it. How your child does has a lot to do with your relationship with them - tell them not that drugs are bad, but exactly what they do to you.
I do know the all the kids I know at Fortismere have great relationships with the staff and will go to them for help and advice.
Ate you on the local MWH and EF Facebook groups? There are many threads about the schools which may be of help to you.

Thank you, that’s helpful. I’m on the CE group but not the others. I will join those too.

Just wondering if anyone else had anymore insights into these two?

I’d go for Fortismere. I lived in CE until last year and what I saw of the HW kids didn’t impress me. Mediocre results too.

Tealpins · 26/09/2025 12:44

I would have thought it was a bit of a no brainer in favour of Fortismere.

I don't think no uniform is problematic. I find the kids look very normal and I actually prefer to see girls in big trackie bottoms compared to the tiny skirts of the HW girls.

I think both schools are in a poor physical state.

Tealpins · 26/09/2025 12:46

And to be fair to the Fortismere kids, some are a bit lippy, but more often than not, quite a few are very polite!

Zhu · 26/09/2025 12:54

They are both very big schools. Have you been round? Our dd has SEN and couldn’t cope with the size of HW, even on the open day.

HW is a bit rough (not just the building) and it is a bit fighty. I didn’t like the range of subject options which felt quite limited for such a big school.

Fortismere wasn’t an option for us 2 years ago, but I think would be going forward. We have friends there who are very happy with it. But it’s even bigger (8 or 9 form entry). I just don’t know how you feel at home as a y7 in a school of that size.

LivelyCrab · 26/09/2025 13:03

Agree @Zhu but in reality we don’t have many other options!

Strong agree on the sheer size of Fortismere. I would find it overwhelming myself!

LivelyCrab · 17/10/2025 16:11

Still in a total dilema about which one to put down with only a couple of weeks to go. We would be in catchment for both, although probably on waiting list initially for one.

This is highly opinionated, but it's a no brainer if you actually have that choice.

HW is massively better than it used to be, so it doesn't feel good to knock it as such a lot of work's been done to sort out some of it's worst issues, and it is considerably safer than it used to be, but it isn't sought after by those looking for good education and not too much trouble, for reasons.

If in reality HW is where you're headed, as Fortismere is generally over subscribed, take a look at APS.
Similar intake to HW, but massively different school, attitudes, atmosphere, and results. Tries hard to do what it says on the tin, unlike HW who are allegedly really good at spin and box ticking, but not delivering.

Fortismere isn't perfect, no school is, and has a majority MC intake, but generally there's a good chance of the majority of children who attend, getting a pretty decent education without too many dramas or misery en route.
Most who get into serious grief do so in their own time and not too much comes into school.
Crowd control isn't known to be a particular issue.
An average child who follows what's asked of them can reasonably expect to get decent exams and go on to do well.

Most of the above can't be said about HW, though they talk a good and different talk, in comparison to the daily issues children report.

But Fortismere is a very MC school, who moved where the gate is to exclude lots of kids from social housing, out of their catchment area, and don't be a child with serious physical disabilities. (though HW is worse on that score.)
If you're someone with Muswell Hill friends and fit that social scene, the chances are you and yours will be happy enough and supported there, and your child will look back happily enough.

LivelyCrab · 18/10/2025 08:59

@Ghostlights this is really helpful thank you so much.

My concern about fortismere was that it was a bit too relaxed, but maybe that is the wrong impression.

Completely agree about APS, we saw it but unfortunately we’re way out of catchment. But it baffles me that HWS can’t implement the same culture there.

Pros for HW are that more friends are going there. We’re currently at Rokesley and almost all his class are going. But we would probably get into fortismere on waiting list from where we live.

Just bumping in case any one has current experiences of Fortismere?
