Anyone else get them every year around now? I mean the massive black house ones. We had our first of the year last night so I will now spend every night scouring the walls in fear of them Angry

I haven’t seen one yet thankfully but it is usually around this time of year they start popping up.

I need to make up a spray bottle of peppermint oil and go round all the windows/doors and under the furniture. Also vacuum under furniture & spaces that aren’t regularly disturbed. It made a huge difference last year, i think we had 1 spider throughout the whole Autumn

Get a spider catcher thingy and get rid of them. Don't just put them outside or they will come back in. They are not stupid.

My place used to be full of spiders because the previous owner was an "ah isn't all nature wonderful type". Now it is largely empty of spiders because I got rid of them all. If you get rid of the big ones they can't breed and make more. It took 2-3 years but worked.

Crunchymum · 08/08/2025 17:55

Rescued this monster recently. Thankfully from a holiday house and not our actual home!!

We put it in an outbuilding as apparently giant house spiders don't do too well outside!!

I thought I was safe at the end of the thread! Bloody monster!

ThatsAlotOfGlitter · 08/08/2025 20:12

Unfortunately, they have been that size in our house too! Where do they hide in the day?

Touch lots of woods not seen one yet but I did read there is a massive influx of false widows this year and to be very wary of them coming in

bestbefore · 08/08/2025 20:45

I found a nest today on my porch, partly cleared it and there was a massive angry looking mummy guarding her babies. Afraid to say I left her to it. Bloody webs are everywhere though!

strawberrysea · 08/08/2025 21:34

I had an absolutely huge brown one in my bedroom a few nights ago. I’m not usually too fussed by them but I’ve never seen a spider that big in my life. I felt terrible because I never usually kill them but I smashed it with a book because I was worried it would breed more mega spiders.

ninjahamster · 08/08/2025 21:37

Had one this week, lost it under the sofa so awaiting it’s reappearance!
We don’t normally get too many of the black and scary ones, we have a lot of cellar spiders and I tend to let them be as I heard they keep them away!

Lonelycrab · 08/08/2025 21:38

I only get lanky spindly spiders..

Always save them, a glass and piece of paper is all you need

Remember, they eat all the bad bugs

isitmytime · 08/08/2025 21:40

I have about 4 in the house at the moment. Kitchen, hall, spare room and my bedroom. I’ve only relocated the one in my bedroom, I draw the line at sharing my room with them.
this year definitely seems worse for them

Cantonet · 08/08/2025 21:41

We have lots of cellar spiders. I never kill them. So 🤞🏼 we don't seem to get to many of the fat ones.

jaundicedoutlook · 08/08/2025 21:42

Found this in DD’s room last weekend. Image is not the best as my hands weren’t entirely steady! It was genuinely monstrous.

DD is the most arachnophobic child ever - happily she’s away until next week, so she didn’t have to encounter it. Gave serious thought to feeding it to either dog or cat, but neither of them looked keen. DH was out, so I got the leaf blower from the garage and blew it out of the window. No way I was putting my hand anywhere near that fucker…I’m still slightly worried that it is lurking around outside, possibly breeding…

I actively encourage the cellar spiders. I've found skeletons of the huge brown bastard ones near the cellar spiders hangouts so I do think they help.

teaandtoastwithmarmite · 08/08/2025 21:45

I found what I think was a false widow in the garage today. I got the spider catcher and helped it outside. I actually saw one of those cellar spiders capture and wrap a big spider and it kept snacking on it in our garage. We’ve had a few of the house ones. DD had one in her room and was freaking out. There was a smaller one in my bedroom crawling up my bed. Only saw it because the kitten did.

I'm terrified of giant house spiders and segestria Florentina (Google it).

Unfortunately September and August are prime spider season. It's when the males are looking for females to mate with.

I dread it every single year.

I joined a spider group on Facebook to try to conquer my fear. It's worked to some degree, as in that I am now kind of ok with the larger ones I've I see them outside (although I'm watching them like a sniper with a target ) and can't relax unless I know where they are and where they're going.

It hasn't worked well for indoors. The thought of the big ones surprising me in my home still utterly terrifies me.

Since I allow the cellar spiders to make a home indoors (and we have many ) it does appear to lessen the quantity we get indoors.

Peppermint and conkers don't work unfortunately.

Ponderingwindow · 08/08/2025 21:51

I live in a region of poisonous spiders that like to invade buildings. Just had the exterminator by for the quarterly inspection and treatment to keep the nasty things away from the house. So no spiders here.

The idea of dying by a necrotizing spider bite is just one of the many things that makes me long for living in a colder climate.

BriceNobeslovesMurielHeslop · 08/08/2025 21:56

I hate them- a monster one appeared in my toothbrush glass last week and I had to wait for my visitor to arrive to get rid of it for me.
I’ve consequently booked myself on a “don’t be scared of spiders day at the zoo”. Thoughts and prayers appreciated 😣

I googled and wish I hadn’t 😄

CheerfulBunny · 08/08/2025 21:58

I love spiders now but I was terrified of them as a child. My poor dad used to have to tramp about all night trying to find them and evict them because I'd refuse to sleep until he found them. I'm very tolerant of them now, poor wee things. I'd never kill them. The smaller ones I ignore, the big buggers are removed with a glass and postcard.
Now flies on the other hand.. dirty feckers. Crawling on my fruit bowl after minutes ago strolling about on dog shit? No way!

dontcomeatme · 08/08/2025 22:01

I had to get up super early the other morning, walked into the bathroom bleary eyed and nearly had a heart attack when I got to the sink, giant black house spider 😫 it's a little early for us I'm soooo upset this has started already. I live like a twitchy cat all through autumn

Eyesopenwideawake · 08/08/2025 22:02

Next time a spider runs wildly and then stops dead it's because it's petrified and it's run out of puff. They only have little lungs and can't move quickly for a long way. Remember that next time.

She asks me to kill the spider.
Instead, I get the most
peaceful weapons I can find.
I take a cup and a napkin.
I catch the spider, put it outside
and allow it to walk away.
If I am ever caught in the wrong place
at the wrong time, just being alive
and not bothering anyone,
I hope I am greeted
with the same kind
of mercy.

Mousehi · 08/08/2025 22:16

I think it's the many ways the world is cruel. Why don't house spiders look like cute little bunny rabbits???

I swear spiders are genuinely extra terrestrial. What needs eight (EIGHT) legs??

If you've booked the one at London zoo then it's amazing. I did it a few years ago and it's been life changing. Hope it works for you too!

BriceNobeslovesMurielHeslop · 08/08/2025 22:23

@fairydell21 thank you, my one is at Edinburgh zoo which seems to have slightly less good reviews. Nothing ventured nothing gained though! Hopefully it will at least help me stay calm enough to get rid of them, and if not I love an excuse for a trip to London!
