Flight cancellation and compensation

My flight back from Florida was cancelled by BA last week. The communication from BA was really poor and it was really stressful. We were re-routed home from a different airport 24 hours later and I had to spend the night sorting out arrangements for my dogs.

They've declined compensation as they say it was due to adverse weather conditions. There was a thunderstorm in the area (but that's pretty usual for Florida!) and other flights were taking off and landing for most of the time with a pause in departures for a while. The flight was pretty under booked so my suspicions is they were looking for a reason to cancel. Has anyone had a similar experience or any views on whether it's worth challenging their decision not to pay compensation?

They were probably running a reduced amount of flights taking off/landing due to the storm and a certain number would have to be cancelled. This has happened to me before. What were you looking for compensation for? They won't pay for extras like parking or dog kennel fees, but I hope they covered hotel costs.

We had this in FL due to a storm too. So frustrating watching other UK flights depart while ours stayed grounded.

Only our food was reimbursed. We were luckily able to go back to our accommodation for an additional night without extra cost.
