Bank cards not going through

Random one but does anyone else’s card play up for no reason? Was in an ice cream shop the other day and my card just wouldn’t go through (after they had made the ice cream 😩) definitely money on it and it wasn’t going through on the contactless or when I put it in the machine (didn’t get to pin, just kept saying remove card) eventually they brought another card reader over and it went through but it was extremely embarrassing and this isn’t the first time this has happened to me. No damage to my card perfectly fine no bends or scratches they always look at you like it’s your card that’s the issue not the machine 😒

Order a new card. There could be a problem with the magnetic strip which isn’t visible - it doesn’t have to be scratched or bent - it might have been near something magnetic - happens occasionally.

Agree, you've got a card hardware problem. No big issue. Just order a new one.

Add it to Gpay or Apple Wallet as a back up too

I never had any trouble with my Visa card, but since the bank switched to Mastercard I have problems at least twice a month. I suppose they have stricter safeguards.

It’s a really new card? Only a couple of months old, why would it go through on the next one then?

Yeah I will try that thanks

Apple Pay or similar. It goes through when my card will not. It’s also helpful to have more than one account. I have a joint account (with Dh) and a personal account. If it happens with one card, I just try the other one and transfer the money over as needed if it’s a big purchase.

Yeah I have another one just didn’t have it on me (typical) not going to forget it now 🫣

Yes, it is the actual card is the issue. My old one used not work in the self checkouts of a local supermarket and I would have to insert it in the attended checkouts. Never an issue in any other business. New card works fine.

spoonbillstretford · 07/08/2025 13:06

I rarely use my actual card and just use GPay.

Though that used to be a pain - I had to go home and get my actual card once i the supermarket 🙄

Now it seems to just ask me for my fingerprint every now and then and they seem to have sorted it out.

I’ve had different cards as I always lose it and it has still done this, this one is only a couple of months old but it’s done it on my older ones too.

Maybe there's something scratching them where you keep them? It could be any nunber of things. Change your wallet and order a new card.
