Terrifying!

Then would you agree his post on Connolly taken on its own wouldn't merit disciplinary action?

It might warrant a quiet word about social media presence and other considerations.
I’m not going to say it ‘wouldn’t merit disciplinary action’ as there is a whole range of in/formal action available AND I am unaware if this teacher has been spoken to before about social media behaviour.

But many here seem to think that firing over this comment would be justified, and that's the attitude I'm questioning. I think in general, society's attitude towards free speech has worsened over the last decade and I think that's a problem.

A teacher doesn’t have “free speech” in terms of being able to say whatever we want. Just like lots of other professions and jobs. I don’t know about you but this is the kind of world I want to live in. I don’t want teachers to say whatever they like to our children. Look online, free speech is everywhere! It’s creating a cesspit. The obsession with free speech is ridiculous.

Agree, without seeing his specific terms of employment it's impossible to know if this post alone would warrant disciplinary action.

We're not talking about what they say to children in a classroom, these are social media posts outside of school.

Clamping down on free speech is counter productive in my view, you may find the online world a cess pit, but it's an expression of what people actually think, and suppressing speech doesn't stop the thought behind it, it probably increases resentment and anger.

The Teaching Standards cover teacher behaviour online as well. We are held to a higher standard than many professions including politicians it often seems.

It doesn’t matter if it’s outside of school or inside, you have professional standards to adhere to at all times and it wasn’t that one comment that got him the sack.

The issue is there isn’t any clamping down on free speech. It’s a made up phenomena by certain strands of the media and certain politicians. What they mean is you can’t incite hatred freely and that is different.

pikkumyy77 · 07/08/2025 19:51

If you read about the group backing the teacher you would see that far from promoting “free speech” they are committed to ending free thought and freedom if association as they are strongly opposed to gay rights, fay people, and Transgender people. In the US “free speech” has been used as a fake wedge issue by far right agitators. They begin by bringing law suits supposedly protecting the “free speech” rights of conservatives to (for exampke) preach against gay people, fay marriage, or DEI, or critical race theory or even jjst teaching that the US is a multicultural society and once they win the case they start radically suppressing everyone else’s speech in the name of religion or politics.

Free speech is a tactic in a long war against the rights of women, gays, immigrants, and people of colour. Its not the desired goal of the teacher or his religious supporters.

Teachers. along with other professionals, sign up to a Code of Conduct. This man is delusional nutjob who broke his. and pissed off his colleagues along the way.

He wants to mouth off on the internet? No one's stopping him.🤷‍♀️. He can be a cleaner. A farmer. A hedgefund

manager. Or a Deliveroo chap. He has many, varied options open to him where he can wang on about as much shit as he wants, on SM.

He just can't be the employee of an organisation and repeatedly break the contract he signed.🤷‍♀️

No sign of Labour councillor Ricky Jones being tried for inciting violence yet......I wonder why that could be 🤔

Only taken a year then!!

Just so we’re clear I’m not an avid follower of Ricky Jones legal disputes, so what I did was asked Google and it popped the news articles about it right up. Obviously not everyone has access to the internet and could check these things for themselves though. Oh wait….

You are aware, are you not, that the previous government left behind a court system that was massively underfunded and understaffed, with a huge backlog?

Honestly, you need to stop digging.

As most trials do, if not longer, nothing suspicious there. We’ve just been part of a trial that took 4.5 years to be heard in court.

Aye well it didnt take em long to get the Southport lot in court did it!!

LlttledrummergirI · 07/08/2025 22:10

They plead guilty! If they had plead not guilty, then they would also be having a trial.

Surely that's pretty straightforward.

They all pleaded guilty in a magistrates' court. That is why things happened so fast. The Labour councillor did not enter a guilty plea, thus triggering a lengthy police investigation and court process.

If you're going to try to throw aspersions, you really need to educate yourself on how things work. It prevents the application of egg to face.

Can we please stop confusing them with actual facts and knowledge? They don't like it.

"Lengthy investigation" ? Viewing a video of him doing slit throat gestures while his gang of acolytes cheering him on? Can't have been that hard surely?
Oh hang on......

GrammarTeacher · 08/08/2025 06:28

The way so many people don’t know how our systems work is shocking.
Trials take a very long time to come to court as there’s not enough court time available. It’s not about how long the investigation takes in the majority of cases.
The rioters who ended up in prison quickly plead guilty so there was no trial. That is the people admitted they had broken the law. This leads to a reduced sentence in most cases.
The state of the backlog is shameful and this is what people should be protesting about. The shocking state and decades of underfunding of central parts of our state that have been cut to the bone because people don’t interact with them as often as frontline healthcare and policing.

The court systems are so backlogged that cases with not guilty please take on average 424 days to come to court, much higher in busy areas of the county. Serious sexual assaults often much much higher (4.5 years in our case).

people aren’t brought to court sooner because they are white. You’ve demonstrated quite clearly you have no actual knowledge on the subject, and no ability or desire to educate yourself, so perhaps best to quit while you’re ahead eh.

Posters like this don't want facts or truth. They just want to live in their little bubble where they're right. Reality doesn't matter,as long as they can sneer about 'two tier Keir' or 'freedom of speech '. You can't educate hate.

slowly learning this 😂

I just can't understand the mindset of wanting to be angry over things that aren't real. The world has enough things that are real to be angry at, pick one of those!
