Mutton dressed as lamb

whatisforteamum · 06/08/2025 12:17

I overheard my colleagues talking about this the other day.
Saying how a certain hair colour was mutton dressed as lamb.
I have a small amount of this and I love it and do it for myself thank you.
Apart from really high heels on mature ladies or mini skirts I think anything goes tbh.
What do you think looks like mutton dressed as lamb?

Nice thread.

DontMowMyMeadow · 06/08/2025 12:19

I hate that phrase.
It's so insulting.

And with your judgement of high heels and mini skirts on "mature" women, you are just as bad as your colleagues.

EchoedSilence · 06/08/2025 12:20

Ageist bollocks.

TheOtherAgentJohnson · 06/08/2025 12:24

Abhorrent concept. Mutton is nicer than lamb anyway.

CircuitMaze · 06/08/2025 12:24

Women should wear what makes them happy, regardless or age or whether it ‘suits’ their figure. You only live once - do what makes you happy and not what certain people in society like to dictate to shame you for your choices.

Beachymamma · 06/08/2025 12:48

Mutton dressed as lamb! Hilariously awful that people use this. So much for supporting each other .

This 💯

K0OLA1D · 06/08/2025 12:50

Vile. Anyone should be able to wear what they like, pierce, tattoo or colour what they like, at any age they desire!

Overandoveradnauseum · 06/08/2025 12:52

I thought " mutton dressed as lamb" was a phrase from the past that, thank goodness, no one used any more .

DiscoBob · 06/08/2025 12:54

I'd think you're a sexist twat for even using the phrase.

Heels on mature ladies?! Give me fucking strength. I'd be delighted if I was physically capable of wearing heels while being 'mature'.

Are you a man?

whatisforteamum · 06/08/2025 12:55

I must admit I hadn't heard the phrase in years.
Not sure why they said it by me as I'm not going to change now.
I tend to wear what I like and bright colours. So what if I have colour on my hair I love it and I don't see why women should hide in the shadows once they reach 50 plus.
Yes I guess I'm a bit judgemental about shoes people can't walk in.
Each to their own though.

Nothing is 'mutton dressed as lamb' and people should wear whatever they damn well like.

ReceiveMyPurpleParsnip · 06/08/2025 13:03

My mum used to say this. She would also denounce women as “trollops” for wearing makeup, and used various other misogynistic terms for those with dyed hair, low necklines, short skirts, figure-hugging outfits, or heels over a height she deemed “ladylike”.

She was an unpleasant, image-focused and insecure woman, who (unsuccessfully) tried to make herself feel better by judging others.

Women of any age, with any figure, can dress themselves in whatever makes them feel most comfortable and confident. This phrase needs to be left in the past where it belongs.

PInkyStarfish · 06/08/2025 13:04

Not heard that said about anyone in years and I use a lot of old phrases and sayings!

I suppose if anyone was to fit that image now it would be JLO or Madonna’s stage wear.

Kellywiththelegs · 06/08/2025 13:06

Yes I guess I'm a bit judgemental about shoes people can't walk in.

I can walk just fine in heels despite my advancing years, what a load of ageist shit.

My grandmother always wore heels. She could walk in them perfectly. Would you count her as ‘mutton dressed as lamb’?

Surely not being able to walk in a pair of shoes is not solely dependent on age. I’m still not sure why you object to a skirt being a certain length after a certain age though?

FullOfMomsense · 06/08/2025 13:22

OP you sound as horrible as them, maybe stop sharing your ancient opinions on women.

Yes, agree @DiscoBob

These threads are tiresome. Why would a woman post something like this.Very doubtful that it is actually a woman.

Beachymamma · 06/08/2025 12:48

Again, is this really coming from a woman…doubtful

whatisforteamum · 06/08/2025 13:27

Apologies as I'm really not a nasty person and I don't gossip either as I believe those that do it are insecure and attempting to make themselves feel better.

Actually you appear to be doing exactly that, OP.

KPPlumbing · 06/08/2025 13:30

I'll continue to wear whatever the fuck I like as i get older.

My mum has always sneered at "ladies of a certain age" showing their arms, their decolletage, their bums, or wearing clothing too tight, or wearing white jeans, or heels, or bright colours. There's not a lot left! A sensible twin set and pearls I guess.

I'm so pleased these stupid rules are dying out - along with rules like never wear navy and black together, or never mix silver and gold jewellery.

I really want to read a thread entitled ‘Sheep people - why would a lamb keep doing this?’

🤣

Yes I guess I'm a bit judgemental about shoes people can't walk in.

I'm wondering when you last saw an older woman (mutton) wearing shoes she was unable to walk in? It's just something I've never seen!
