Mutton dressed as lamb

whatisforteamum · 06/08/2025 12:17

I overheard my colleagues talking about this the other day.
Saying how a certain hair colour was mutton dressed as lamb.
I have a small amount of this and I love it and do it for myself thank you.
Apart from really high heels on mature ladies or mini skirts I think anything goes tbh.
What do you think looks like mutton dressed as lamb?

This thread is rage bait, ageist and misogynistic. I don’t understand why this sort of trolling is allowed here.

Makes me wonder sometimes if mumsnet enjoy all the fury and frothing.

Somewhat agree.

I think there is a difference between 'dress however makes you happy' and looking like one has no self-awareness.

whatisforteamum · 06/08/2025 16:34

I think I was shocked to hear such a phrase.
The person who said it is a bit younger than me.
I started the thread as I genuinely was interested as I don't think tattoos hair colour or piercings etc are the domain of only young people.
My df thought women over 40 should not have long hair I still do and do as I please .
I just wondered if it was still a thing as I usually work with men who have no such rules.

Very low cut busty tops, very short skirts with very high heels, too much heavy makeup, dyeing hair very dark solid colours that are way too dark for ageing skin tone

Obviously people can wear what they want but I just don’t think the above mentioned are flattering on older women

cupfinalchaos · 06/08/2025 16:59

Of course women should wear what makes them happy but in my late 50’s, am I going to dress like my dd in her late 20’s? Nope.. I don’t want to show off my crepy skin. I may have to spend a bit more on a good cut but I’d rather look good for my age.

TheRealGoose · 06/08/2025 17:04

Good grief who starts a thread to ask specifically “What do you think looks like mutton dressed as lamb?”. How dismaying.

the answer is nothing. But maybe you can explain why you started a thread to ask such a question.

You're just like your charming colleagues it seems ...

As long as they stick by your rules regarding heels though. Righto ...

Hatty65 · 06/08/2025 17:25

Hmm. I'm just about 60 and I'm wearing a Scooby Doo t shirt today. Does that count?

It's not a nice thing for people to say.

ShesTheAlbatross · 06/08/2025 17:28

whatisforteamum · 06/08/2025 12:55

I must admit I hadn't heard the phrase in years.
Not sure why they said it by me as I'm not going to change now.
I tend to wear what I like and bright colours. So what if I have colour on my hair I love it and I don't see why women should hide in the shadows once they reach 50 plus.
Yes I guess I'm a bit judgemental about shoes people can't walk in.
Each to their own though.

So what if you have colour in your hair, that’s fine because you love it… but you’ll criticise an older woman in a short skirt? Maybe they love it?

waitingforpost · 06/08/2025 17:38

Nothing is mutton dressed as lamb. Some styles are not to my taste but not because of age.

This, some older women look great in heels & some younger women can't walk in them.

waitingforpost · 06/08/2025 17:39

But of course the same rules don't apply to the likes of 80-somethings Rod Stewart

Rods outfits are bad at any age!

SomeOfTheTrouble · 06/08/2025 17:41

So you’re annoyed that people are judging you for having a hair colour that they deem to be not appropriate on older ladies, but you’re happy to judge other women for wearing things that you deem to be not appropriate?

greengreyblue · 06/08/2025 17:43

Well they are awful people op. Don’t join them by adding that heels are not for mature women.
I’m on school holidays and heard that awful man on Ch5 ( J Vine show. But not him- was grey and bearded) stating that women shouldn’t drink a pint and they should have a wine or a G&T. Thought this stuff had died out years ago!

Port1aCastis · 06/08/2025 17:47

My Mum wears high heels all the time she has several pairs in different colours, she also has blonde hair, red nails and wears tight clothing and she looks great. If I told her she looked like mutton dressed as lamb she'd lamp me one and take me to task. Women should wear what they want and not care what others think

Not sure what's wrong with high heels either, I sometimes wear them if I'm going somewhere nice

Kingsleadhat · 06/08/2025 17:50

What a load of ageist crap. I'm wondering, as I'm 67 and wear whatever I want, what the vegan equivalent insult would be?

notthatoldchestnut · 06/08/2025 17:52

let women wear what they want. Provided it doesn’t outrage public decency, then what’s the issue?

RatherTardy · 06/08/2025 17:54

whatisforteamum · 06/08/2025 13:27

Apologies as I'm really not a nasty person and I don't gossip either as I believe those that do it are insecure and attempting to make themselves feel better.

And yet.....

Frogs88 · 06/08/2025 17:55

It’s just a horrible misogynistic phrase. No one makes comments like that about what older men wear so why is it acceptable for woman?

KawasakiBabe · 06/08/2025 17:59

Horrid statement, and I haven’t just thought this since I’ve aged, lol.

I’m 58, I wear whatever I bloody feel like wearing. I’ve heard older women shouldn’t wear jeans, converse, leggings, their hair long, pony tails, long nails, mini skirts, bikinis… blah blah fucking blah. I look anazing in all those and so do all the other women in the world.
