Do I need an official deed poll?

Hello! šŸ‘‹
My current registered name is Kathy, I’m engaged due to be married next year and my married surname goes much better with Kath so would like to drop one letter from my name and go from Kathy Jones to Kath Smith for example. Do I need a deed poll for this?
All unofficial items are already Kath but I’d like officials to change too. Can I change my first name with my marriage certificate or do I have to do a deed poll for the first name first I.e Kathy Jones to Kath Jones then marry to Kath Smith? Can’t find much info online do only dropping a letter from a current name not a complete change.
Many thanks!

I would just keep your official name as Kathy and go by Kath and save yourself the bother. I know a Catherine who is always Kate for example (and it’s not the Princess of Wales!)

Your marriage certificate should be in the name you use on official documents, so if you're keen to be Kath on that then yes, you should change your name by deed poll.

As pp says, you don't have to do it officially at all, but if it's important to you to be Kath for banking, passport and so on then it's probably worth it. Costs about £50.

Thank you, I am also considering as it does seem a lot of admin. However, this afternoon I’ve ordered something online, using Kath as my account details and had my order declined as Kath doesn’t match the name on my card (Kathy) but it default filled it out and wouldn’t let me change the payment name. It can get very confusing which name I’ve used for which account etc and only getting worse as I’m getting older! 🄹

Do a free deed poll, DONT pay for one it's completely unnecessary.

Ok, so further to this, if I was to change to Kath via a deed poll, do I have to change my legal docs banks, driving licence etc once I’ve done that, or can I wait until next year and change both names at the same time when I change surname?

I think either would be fine, because bank, dvla etc won't get a notification saying 'Kathy is now Kath, cancel all records relating to Kathy' so you can keep using them in the immediate future. If as pp says you can do it for free then obviously do that!

Thanks so much for the replies, I’ll definitely look into the free option, I didn’t realise there was one.

I don’t think you can change first name with a marriage certificate. I changed both my first and last names a few years ago, I used this website to produce a deedpoll:
https://freedeedpoll.org.uk

I just printed it out, signed it + witnesses, and started sending it off. I haven’t had any issues, and all my official things are changed (passport, driving licence, banking etc).
