It occurred to me today that I have been in to Zara so many times but never bought anything for myself there! Previously I don’t think I would have fitted but but now It would I can still never find anything in there? Are there any high street shops that you find the same?

I also don’t think I have shopped in H and M for 20 years due to their horrible fit!

Bon Marche

HundredMilesAnHour · 03/08/2025 22:56

Primark. I’ve never set foot in one either and have no intention of ever doing so. I don’t agree with the ethics / environmental impact of fast fashion though.

Now I do tend to buy their jeans as they do shortarse ones!

I've also never bought anything from Zara and I can never believe that it's so busy/popular. Everything in there is awful!

I don’t think I have actually bought anything apart from socks for myself in there for years. Their sizing is awful too. My teen daughter bought some joggers and one wash later they are so bobbly! I have said never again!

Also Zara
The first time i went in, I asked them to explain their sizing. The sales person gave me a haughty look and said “We don’t make clothes big enough for you.” I was a size 14 at the time.

I am also overwhelmed by H&M ladieswear, but used to buy a lot of stuff from them for the DC.

Erm… River Island; Urban Outfitters; Hollister - all feel too young. Joe Brown - too polyestery. Office - actually don’t carry shoes big enough for me (9).

FurForksSake · 03/08/2025 23:01

Also Zara, previously too big. I’m a size 8-10 now so maybe fit into a large? 🤣

river island, not since I was a teen.

mango

reiss

Bon marche

whistles

mint Velvet

no idea if all those even still exist or what is high street now?

basically I shop at next, supermarkets, joules, Boden, Seasalt, m&s and John Lewis.

haven’t been in Primark in the uk in ages, but do use the one in Marbella when I’m out there.

Shock bloody hell.

River Island. I think it’s expensive compared to similar shops.

I have been a size 16 for 25 years and they seemed to stop at size 12 now I am a 10 and I’m still not seeing their appeal

I would love to wear all saints but it’s too spenny!

I agree. I can't see the attraction.

smallsilvercloud · 03/08/2025 23:04

I’ve been in but never bought from Fat face or white stuff, gone as far as trying on clothes but weren’t right for me.
never bought from phase eight or Hobbs.

Shmoigel · 03/08/2025 23:04

Urban outfitters makes me feel depressed as I have worn it all previously

I bought something from Fatface last werk for the first time. For once it wasn't a dowdy colour.

I'm an 8 and fit into a small at Zara. I don't know why they have a reputation for being super small. That said, I have only been buying from them for a couple of years.
For me, H&M. The quality is very poor and the prices relatively high.

ReignOfError · 03/08/2025 23:10

Monsoon because everything there is three feet too long for me.

I once walked into a Zara in an airport as I was flying home from a conference somewhere. Store assistant flew towards me and told me they did not have anything that would fit me. I was a size 14-16. Put me right off!

Ohnobackagain · 03/08/2025 23:16

@Shmoigel they do go up to an XXL and their sizes are bigger than they used to be - I find I either like a lot of things, or nothing. Same with H&M. Primark I used to get a lot of camis and things but lately - I’ve stopped even bothering to look. Actually get quite a few ‘new or almost new’ things from ebay.

Now I do tend to buy their jeans as they do shortarse ones!

I'm tall and wandered in Bon Marche one day some years back and picked up a pair of short length jeans in sale that were perfect ankle skimmers on me for £20.

A shop I have almost nothing from is Zara. I own 2 nice pieces from there - a fluffy grey overcoat from the early 00s (a 10 that fits) and a faux leather jacket from 4 years ago (bewilderingly sized XL). The random sizing thing bothers me but I also think the quality is shockingly bad. I also hold against them the red jumper I bought that rubbed colour on the vest top I wore under it before binning it.

JamesMacGill · 03/08/2025 23:28

Also Zara. Expensive tat which is poor quality, tiny sizes and tries hard to be ‘fashion’ but just looks a bit ugly and hard to style.

Ugh, how rude! And honestly not true, I wouldn't think. I suppose in-store might have a very small range of sizes, but Zara I think a 14-16 would fit an L or XL at a pinch. Maybe it depends on what country you're in, as well.

FurForksSake · 03/08/2025 23:36

It would have been Germany, Austria or Denmark, most likely Germany. But the experience definitely left an impression.

their website also used to be bloody awful, no idea how to look at just pictures of the clothes. I did used to buy some toddler clothes there, they weren’t awful.

skippy67 · 03/08/2025 23:37

Hobbs. Cos. White Stuff. Fatface. I love Zara though!
