AVIOS Points - can anyone explain how they work?

So, my DH has an American Express card that earns Avios points when he spends. We are just about to book flights with Qatar that also earns Avios points.

If we pay with his card, does that mean that we get double the points?

I'm so confused with it all!

Surely your husband knows how to use his rewards?

No, we are new to this. I wouldn't be asking if he knew.

It doesn’t work out as double, usually you only earn 1 avios per £ spent on the card. For flights it’s super complicated on how they calculate it as it depends on the class (economy, business etc), the fare you actually pay, and any loyalty status with the airline - but some airlines base it on the distance flown. Anyway, it means that from the credit card you would get something like 2000 Avios from a £2k flight spend, but a blue card holder might earn 8000 from the actual flight.
