Responding to “mansplaining”

Do you have a useful strategy?

I think my being middle aged and visibly disabled has brought it out in spades and every other man I meet makes it his mission to give me the unasked for benefit of his wisdom on the bleeding obvious.

I just tend to say oh really and see how far they will go whilst inwardly laughing at them but sometimes I get fed up and would like to have of a good way of shutting it down without simply saying shut up you arrogant twat or similar.

Eh? You've lost me.

You quoted me saying that it doesn't always happen at work to which I agree.

And where I quoted you I questioned whether it was mansplaining as you asked your DH if he understood to which he explained that he did understand, so was it in fact mansplaining as it was a response to your question?

I mentioned a technical term for something connected with my work and was checking with him to see if he knew and understood what I was talking about.

He then mansplained it all back at me.

Or he explained what he understood of it in response to your question.

Or he explained what he understood of it in response to your question.

Or I've been married to him for 27 years and know whether he is mansplaining or not. In this case, he was.

If you can bear to wait until the end of the rigmarole:
”Thanks for that, [insert name here]. Now, can you explain mansplaining to me?”

florathedress · 05/08/2025 15:50

A simple fuck off it’s really effective without being drawn into it.

I was talking with another female about my upcoming mammogram, when a man butted in and described what would happen at the appointment. Honestly, they can't help it

You are too kind! I know what you mean, but they can help it - they choose to butt in and dominate. What did you say?
