Just seen this little fella under the shed, what do you think? Mouse or rat?

Definitely a juvenile rat. This is a bigger version I spotted round my bin.

That is 100% a rat

How can you be 100%.Plenty of people saying it’s a mouse.

sciaticafanatica · 02/08/2025 16:11

Definitely a young rat

everythingthelighttouches · 02/08/2025 16:12

If that is an apple next to it, it is a baby rat.

lots of people never see them (I don’t)

troppibambini6 · 02/08/2025 16:13

Do mice not like apples? I have loads of apples in my garden I wonder if that explains my rat friend!

tumblingdowntherabbithole · 02/08/2025 16:19

That's a baby rat. Our cat catches them regularly 😩

We have regular rats coming in from the shithole of a garden next door.

At this time of year, we're seeing lots of smaller rats as there are lots of juveniles around. They are much smaller than the big adult rats, but still way bigger than a mouse.

And if you're seeing one, there's probably quite a few lurking unseen, sorry.

I would say 100% a rat. Way, way too big to be a mouse, and identical to the little ratty bastards that keep coming into my garden.

dogcatkitten · 02/08/2025 16:55

Naked tail is a rat, could be a young one.

that's a rat for sure

Youllnevergetabetterbitofbutteronyourknife · 02/08/2025 17:01

It's a baby rat. Look at the size of the feet. Mice are much smaller with a shorter tail.

myplace · 02/08/2025 17:04

Thing is, out in the day is not good, and while I didn’t mind mine he was getting more confident and also getting really big! He was cute when we first started seeing him. Then he was less cute, as he dangled from our hanging tree feeders . Then he looked like he’d be able to open the doors soon. So we shut the buffet down.

LBOCS2 · 02/08/2025 17:04

I’d say that that’s a house mouse - which are quite a lot bigger than field mice but still smaller than rats. The face and ears are the wrong shape to be a rat, even juvenile, and the tail while bald looking isn’t thick enough at the base to be a rat.

I used to keep fancy mice and rats as pets, and my cats bring in field mice, house mice, shrews and rats relatively regularly, so I have had quite a lot of hands on experience with both!

myplace · 02/08/2025 17:04

And mice are tiny.

New2you · 02/08/2025 17:05

Baby rat

They aren’t born huge……

namechangedforthisquestion1 · 02/08/2025 17:12

100% a young rat, mummy rats never have just one so you have a litter very close by

UnlimitedBacon · 02/08/2025 17:13
