Be honest, when you see fat people running?

When you see an overweight person out running what do you think? As a morbidly obese person I always used to admire their confidence and ability. I am now an overweight person (size 16) and I still feel like the size 24 I once was. I feel like everyone is looking at me and thinking ‘look at the state of her’.

Do you judge fat runners badly or do you think ‘well done’?

I am always full of admiration and respect. That's literally all I think.

I have been fat, then thin and now plump again! And when I see these people it makes me feel guilty it's not me doing it!

skippy67 · 01/08/2025 13:29

I do notice, and i think "well done". I joined a running club last year which had people of all ages and sizes.

Daisy03 · 01/08/2025 13:30

I really admire anyone who’s running, and if they look out of breath or tired I assume it’s possibly because they’ve already run a great distance or have been pushing themselves. It’s amazing for anyone to try and get healthy.

I think "good on you".

EmpressaurusKitty · 01/08/2025 13:30

‘Well done’, every time. And I’d smile at her as she passed me.

autienotnaughty · 01/08/2025 13:30

Admiration, the heavier /lack of fitness you have the harder it is!

summerlovingvibes · 01/08/2025 13:30

I'm also overweight and have recently started running. Now when I see larger people running (if I'm not at the time - perhaps passing them in the car etc) I think "better to be moving than driving!"

Livelaughlurgy · 01/08/2025 13:31

I think anyone exercising is commendable. I judge people smoking and walking though. If I'm being totally honest I probably hold heavier people running or walking in higher regard, because I make an assumption that's it's more difficult, but it's more that I add a mental fair play as well as a mental well done.

Hubblebubble · 01/08/2025 13:31

I'm overweight and have completed half marathons in perfectly respectable times. The fact that i pass the finish line alongside people who have proper runners physiques gives me a confidence boost.

ThatCleverCoralCrow · 01/08/2025 13:31

I respect that as clearly trying to get fitter and healthier!

Errolwasahero · 01/08/2025 13:31

As others, admiration mixed with a little sadness that I can’t join them.

devildeepbluesea · 01/08/2025 13:31

I think how much running hurts me these days (enormous bunion) and get a bit jealous of both their ability to run and their determination to.

countdowntonap · 01/08/2025 13:32

I think that unless you particularly love running, you’d be better spending your time lifting weights to achieve the body you want.

MostlyFoggyTheseDays · 01/08/2025 13:32

Full admiration and think it is a very positive example about taking control. Also a bit of guilt that I should drag my limpy arse out - wonky or not!

toomanydicksonthedancefloor1 · 01/08/2025 13:32

I used to be a runner but always get injured since I had kids so had to give up and was gutted. So my initial thought is jealousy as I would love to be out with you!

my second thought is well done for doing something positive and getting out there trying to improve your health.

LadyKenya · 01/08/2025 13:32

I don't think anything in particular, negative, or positive tbh.

Reeeallytired · 01/08/2025 13:32

Nothing really tbh, all runners regardless of size I don’t think anything of. Most people will be indifferent, some will think good for them and it’s only a tiny percentage of arseholes that would judge and pay no mind to them!

YeOldy · 01/08/2025 13:33

I always admire anyone who is running even if they are running slower than I’m walking.

Lou670 · 01/08/2025 13:33

I admire all runners, no matter what size they are as I can't run!

I mind my own business.

user3827 · 01/08/2025 13:33

i find it inspiring. If he/she is doing it then so should i!

elm26 · 01/08/2025 13:33

If I notice at all, I genuinely think “good for them!” I admire anyone that runs though as I hate it and refuse to!

WalkingThroughTreacle · 01/08/2025 13:34

Why would I judge?

To use a similar scenario, people who think gyms are only for fit folk are like dentists who only want to treat perfect teeth.

Fentyfan · 01/08/2025 13:34

Yeah either i don’t notice as lost in my thoughts, or a combination of guilt about my lack of exercise and wondering where they find the time and energy to do it.

Brendahollowayreconsider · 01/08/2025 13:34

It takes bottle to go running in public if overweight and run the gauntlet of getting abuse from idiots who think they're hilarious.
Good on anyone getting out there 👍
