Be honest, when you see fat people running?

When you see an overweight person out running what do you think? As a morbidly obese person I always used to admire their confidence and ability. I am now an overweight person (size 16) and I still feel like the size 24 I once was. I feel like everyone is looking at me and thinking ‘look at the state of her’.

Do you judge fat runners badly or do you think ‘well done’?

I think fair play and really admire them.

the80sweregreat · 01/08/2025 13:45

I admire them too as a fast walking pace does me in and I can’t run for toffee.

Takemybrainaway · 01/08/2025 13:45

My first thought for seeing anyone running is that I really should go to the gym

If I see anyone running I just think "well done" and wish I had time to do the same!

Letsd0this · 01/08/2025 13:46

I think, there is a person running.

Backtothebestbits · 01/08/2025 13:46

I am honestly in awe at anyone that puts their running shoes on and gets out there. I run myself and I know how hard it can be to get started. Never do I look at anyone and judge them for how they look but just think hey 👋 fellow runner!

glittercunt · 01/08/2025 13:46

I was bordering on underweight for years, have been plump, am currently morbidly obese.

I have always, at every size of my own, felt proud of obviously overweight people for participating in any sport or fitness activity. Us fatties get a lot of judgment and laughs and rudeness. Like the fat dancing man who was shamed by some horrid people in a club that time that went viral.

My obese friends' biggest struggle with swimming or the gym or running is always topped by 'people will see'. And I think that's so sad.

99bottlesofkombucha · 01/08/2025 13:47

I think how hard they must be working. I notice a few extra kilos when running and if you’re obese you’re probably about half my weight again- I’d be staggering under that, so I think wow.

I think that unless you particularly love running, you’d be better spending your time lifting weights to achieve the body you want.

I’m not a big fan of cardio, but it is good for heart health.

JLou08 · 01/08/2025 13:47

I admire them and wish I had the motivation and stamina. Running outdoors is not easy!

Colinfromaccounts · 01/08/2025 13:48

I think good for them but I also wonder if running is the best sport for anyone not already skinny as it is difficult and hard on the knees.

MaggieBsBoat · 01/08/2025 13:48

jealousy and admiration!

the80sweregreat · 01/08/2025 13:48

I’m terrified of falling over or tripping up , so I always am in awe of the runners around my way.

SunnyPrague · 01/08/2025 13:48

I think ‘GOOD FOR YOUUUUU!’ 🤩

I’d LIKE to give them a cheery clap, blow kisses and shout ‘BRAVO! WOOHOO! LOOK AT YOU, YOU’RE SMASHING IT! 🙌🏻🤩’. (I don’t actually do that, obviously, but that’s how I feel).

It takes real guts to pull on your trainers and get out there. Anyone who is out running (or jogging or walking) is doing something so wholesome and positive for themselves and their health and it’s lovely to see. We were all beginners once.

Hold your head up, OP. You are doing a great thing - enjoy it and be proud of yourself.

whitewinespritzerandastraw · 01/08/2025 13:49

I notice and I always think good for them.

isthesolution · 01/08/2025 13:49

I’m always proud that they identified that getting fitter might be good for them.

MagnificentBastard · 01/08/2025 13:49

I notice runners’ style rather than their size. Some people make it look natural and effortless, some look like every stride is an effort.

Unless I’m on a treadmill, I’m the latter, I’d like to be the former.

Someone would have to be obese before I’d notice their size first.

OrangeCrushes · 01/08/2025 13:50

Depends if they are in my way on the pavement 😂. That's probably the only time I even notice runners.

Admiration and respect, swiftly followed by a bout of punishing self-criticism that I lack the discipline to get out there and join them!

TtbbOnTheFloor · 01/08/2025 13:53

I don’t really think anything, I like running but don’t really have any interest in exercise other people do or why. I do notice on this thread how many people believe they know what fat people are thinking, feeling, their motivations for running and feel qualified to decide whether they’re doing the right thing or not. The arrogance Grin

tiddletiddleboomboom · 01/08/2025 13:53

I'm a runner myself and when I see this my automatic thought is: "fantastic - so happy someone else enjoys running". I have a massive fondness for anyone who runs and I always feel much camaraderie with them. Their weight is completely irrelevant, I am just happy they are doing it.

lighteningthequeen · 01/08/2025 13:54

I find it strange that anyone would notice an overweight runner and feel proud etc of them… they wouldn’t do that for a non-overweight runner 😳

I’m an overweight runner, and if I saw you running OP I would think some / all of the following: I really should try to go for a run today, where is my running vest, ohhh I like her trainers. That’s pretty much it!

I’ve been running a long time, most of it whilst overweight and I’ve never had a negative comment or anything. Other runners are always nice, and I’ve had loads of great chats at park runs!

Viviennemary · 01/08/2025 13:54

All the runners I see are really skinny. But if I saw an overweight one I'd think great you are trying to improve your health.

pilates · 01/08/2025 13:54

Good on them
