Can I wash a bank note

£10 bank note
In kitchen cupboard and something spilt on it. I think maple syrup. So it's sticky and horrible
What's the best way to clean it?
Can I soak it in water even?

I've discovered more than one crisp freshly washed note in my time in the pockets of jeans particularly. Does them a power of good. Sadly not so much now since everyone taps to pay.
