House cleaning

Housechallenge · 31/07/2025 18:26

I have decided to give my self a challenge. That during the school holidays. I have to make my house spotless. That includes every drawer/shelf and cupboard.. things like labeling charges. Finishing of bits that I keep meaning to. Everything in easy reach everything in its true home and not just Dumped in random places.

I want to know where stuff is rather that know its somewhere.

I want to make it so that if I was showing someone round i would feel good doing it.

I have already started in the kitchen I started that at 2.15 . Im not going to rush everything though . Im going to do it in a relaxed manor and keep it positive

We have recently moved home, our new home is all immaculate and ordered, it feels fantastic.
Good luck, I’m sure you will achieve it, you will feel wonderful when it’s done.

AddictedToBooks · 31/07/2025 18:38

I'm also in the process of this - done the kitchen and it feels fabulous (and I even treated myself to some gorgeous glass jars to put on display, now that the ugly clutter is all gone).
Done the bedrooms and bathroom too and next up is the sitting room - just doing a drawer a day and being ruthless.

In half way through the kitchen. I have bought a small shelf unit that sits on the side for the sugar, coffee , chocolate etc .cups can fit to so its all neat now. I bought some plastic stacking storage as well. So I can keep cleaning things more tidy. Still got quite a bit to do. But even if the kitchen takes 2 days its fine.

Sounds like your on a roll. Im going to carry on with the kitchen . Then probably do the cupboard under the stairs. Im not as far ahead as yoi are.

Glass jars sound lovely. Nice to have the finishing touches.

Sounds like you're making brilliant headway with it.

I bought 3 gorgeous old style ribbed sweet jars with lids from Asda to use as my tea, coffee and sugar canisters - only £3.50 each and they're gorgeous - a lot larger than I thought they'd be too.

I've been on my declutter rampage for a while now - the thing is, my DH loves to bring home random "stuff" whereas I like clean and clear lol - we've come to a compromise that he can have two rooms in the house for his "collections" and I'm not in charge of cleaning or tidying those rooms (he honestly collects loads - Star Wars, Mustang memorabilia, Anne Stokes gothic angels etc although to be fair to him, he does display it all nicely and does keep it clean) and the sitting room and kitchen are exactly how I want them - clutter free and easy to clean.

Your shelf unit sounds lovely - in our kitchen it was jars and packets that were the main nightmare.

RabbitsRock · 01/08/2025 09:36

That’s great OP, especially that you are relaxed. I get very stressed then end up doing nothing! My physical health wasn’t good for a few years & DH works full time so we found that only the bare minimum really got done. I look around & there’s dust & dirt everywhere. I really want to start with what DM calls “a good bottoming” eg skirting boards, behind furniture etc then work up. Unfortunately I’ve trapped a nerve in my back so it will all have to wait for a bit although I have been sorting through piles & carrier bags in the lounge & our bedroom. Good luck & keep us updated.

Sounds like you have split things well. Its just
Its just me and the kids at home. We dont really collect anything so don't need to worry about that. Its nice that you split the rooms like that. One of my tea sugar coffee containers has gone missing. Bit odd 🤔

joining in ! Still decluttering though …… had to move the cooker this week for some work and it was awful !

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 01/08/2025 10:39

Before last autumn I told myself that once the clocks changed, I’d go through every drawer and cupboard in the house, at least one a day, rationalise and get rid of all clutter/anything no longer needed.
I did precisely 2.
Maybe this year…

I used to be the same with the stress side of it . Especially when my house was in a massive state it was awful. Things are not so bad now so my mind set has changed and im feeling a bit more relaxed mentally in how I do it.

Sounds hard for you . Could your DH do the skirting? I struggled with bending low. I get breathless when I do . I sometimes use a mop or I have a proper skirting cleaner thing on a pole. But I guess with trapped nerve its almost every move you make that hurts.

Doing little bits is OK if your up for it dont put yourself through pain though. I hope your better soon 💐

I moved into my new house at the end of March. It was wonderful having everything spotless, new, perfect, uncluttered. I did suddenly think this morning that the housework was now getting more in depth than a quick dust around. Suddenly I need to do skirting, door frames, nooks and crannies. Such a shame it didn't stay perfect for longer.

I'm like that with my bed. I can only move it out a few feet as it will hit the wall in front of it. Pointless really, and I dread to think of the horrors that lie beneath!!!

Well that's a perfect excuse to treat yourself to some new ones x
Funnily enough, one of mine had gone missing too and I was sick of having an ugly jar of coffee next to the tea and sugar lol

Oh small gaps are a pain big enough for things to find their way. But to small to remove it.

I have an ottoman bed so cant move it. But please to say I haven't used it to dump stuff . I just have winter things like thick blankets winter coats etc .

All my stuff im the kitchen is miss match it would be nice if it was all matching. My toaster is stainless steel. My microwave/fridge freezer / air fryer are all black. Washing machine white. Multi cooker stainless steel. Would be nice if they were all matching but not black. Never mind that's just how it is.

If you really want it all the same colour, you can buy vinyls - if you do though, you'd have to leave the white ring around your washing machine door, but I actually think that would look really nice. Or as you don't want black, the fridge would probably be easier to do - treat yourself to a browsing session on Etsy and other sites and see if you get some ideas.

You definitely deserve to reward yourself for each room you do.
I've just ordered a black and white gingham bedset for our bed - I was wrong before when I said I don't collect stuff because as I changed the bedding today, I discovered that we have at least 20 different bedsets but I love them all and don't want to part with any of them.

My neighbour spray painted his washing machine lol but I wouldn't do that unless it was fire resistant paint and only on the front. He just used generic car paint in purple haha

Kitchen is almost finished i just need to sort out a shelving unit that i may take out of the kitchen. Sort and clean the fridge. Then mop the floors.

I probably wont do it till this evening though.
Then it will be time to do under the stairs

Kids have been stuck in doors for a few days. So going to take them to the park a bit later

I’m not doing anything like the level of you guys, but I deconstructed the shelves etc of my fridge and thoroughly leaned the lot. Now when I open the door I’m blinded by the gleam - it’s amazing! Next plan is declutter a cupboard of doom in my bedroom.

I love this thread. I’ve got 2 weeks off and we will hopefully be moving into our first purchased home in a couple of months. My 12 year old DD fancies herself as a bit of an interior designer so we’re going to do a bit of this today. Kitchen has packets everywhere. Hardest will be my clothes as I lost weight then put some on so have all different sizes.
