Villa Virgin. Menorca. Those in the know… prioritise large pool but less nice resort OR smaller pool but much nicer resort?

Single parent
two early teens

both adore swimming and spend hours in the pool

the dilemma is
10x5 metre pool in Cala Forcat (meant to be quite run down)
or
8x4 in Cala Galdana

I have been to neither! We will have a car but like to very much limit. Will spend a lot of time In villa but also will definitely want to walk lots.

Not big foodies but would be nice to have a couple of decent restaurants and not grotto locality

I'd prioritise the bigger pool with teens. Cala Galdana gets very busy, especially the beach. If you'll have a car I'd go for Cala'n Forcat - you can get anywhere on Menorca very quickly (it's only 40 miles long). Ciutadella is beautiful to walk around with plenty of great cafes and restaurants (including local ones not aimed at tourists) plus the cheese shops if you like cheese! If you head to the middle of the island you have the 'best' beach at Son Bou - get up early to arrive ahead of the crowds, take a picnic and head along the beach away from the hotels. It's great for swimming. We used to stay in a villa at Son Bou but drive to our favourite restaurant (south of Ciutadella) pretty much every evening.

Do you have the link for the villa pls?!

have you been to Cala forcat? I’ve heard it is very grotty but then the villa looks amazing!

Cala Galdana is gorgeous. Personally I found Spn Bou utterly soulless to visit. I couldn't be doing with having to drive somewhere every evening; much though I like Ciutadella.

Ademasstudio · 30/07/2025 15:57

@tobee any thoughts on Cala Forcat?

I don't know it recently but had a lovely holiday in nearby Cala en Blanes over 50 years ago when I was a child! It wasn’t as built up then! Sorry!

The sea is fabulous for swimming, you may find a cove more appealing as they are more confined iyswim.

I liked Cala en Porter and Cala en Bosch to stay in. But that was with smaller (my own) children and a while ago.

Ademasstudio · 30/07/2025 16:06

And overall favourite is Cala Galdana? A nice resort center?

Depends on definitions of grotty but I don't think anywhere in Menorca is rundown compared to resorts elsewhere.

I have two teens/preteen and we had an 8x4 pool last year and it was lovely
Perfectly big enough
if it was 5x3/plunge type pool then no but 8x4 is fine for swimming

MadameSzyszkoBohusz · 30/07/2025 16:14

I can’t comment on the resorts, but as frequent villa stayers, I would prioritise the resort over the pool size. When there’s only your family using it, a smaller pool is still big enough, even when you’re all in it - and a lot of the time you won’t all be in it.

Malariahilaria · 30/07/2025 16:19

I would take the bigger pool for teens. Menorca is so small nowhere takes too long to get to really. Teens tend to want to play games in the pool or buy ridiculously large floaties so smaller pools aren't as much fun.

That’s what I’m edging for

It was villa libre on Oliver’s travels - tbh I think the photos were fair if you wanted to look at it and see the size of the pool.

Thanks but it’s actually 10m long not 8m!

Really?
it was definitely described as 8x4 when we booked it 2 years ago! So much so we had a discussion about whether it was long enough and measured it out in the garden!

Now the listing says 10m!
