Safe for a solo female?

Hi - I'm hoping that I might soon be able to take a break from everything and am not afraid to travel alone. There are a lot of holiday destinations now that are more available than even 10 years ago.

Apart from really obvious places like warzones, where would you recommend and where would you consider is definitely NOT safe for a female travelling alone? Can be anywhere in the world.

Thank you!

@Fishlegs I got adopted too! It was really nice. My Spanish is so bad everyone thought I was German due to hard consonants.

@YourBrickTiger dd got raped in a hostel in Sri Lanka when she was on a group tour by someone who worked in the hostel. I get that she was very unlucky.

My late mum loved Singapore and it was her favourite city with London a close second. When in Singapore, my late father was ill so she went solo around the city. She would have been about 60 at that time.

Regarding your list - I think the UAE is perfectly safe. You will get stared at for being a white, blonde woman, but I never felt unsafe there. Do wear modest clothing.

You might consider Kuwait. I loved it.

Singapore is very safe but phenomenally boring. I would do Malaysia instead. Also safe.

I didn't find it boring. I found it a nice breather between other Asian countries.

Yes my mum loved the relaxed pace, the gardens, the food and the friendliness. It was a chill vibe for her. @NPET She was a very fit 60 year old.

Disagree. It's not boring at all but I probably wouldn't go for more than a few days. We had 2 1/2 days there last year and thoroughly enjoyed it (but not the heat, especially after the rain, we likened it to opening a dishwasher when all the wet, hot steam comes rushing out 😂). I think it's a good stop over point before further travel.

Tbh I found the "heat" in Singapore was wonderful after the intense heat of Thailand!

Depends a bit on your age. Once you’re in your 60s, places like Egypt and Morocco are fine for solo women. Assuming you are reasonably savvy and not likely to fall for a romance scam, elders are treated with more respect than most tourists.

Thats what I found in Tunisia when I went on my own, everyone was so nice to me and I got absolutely no harassment. That was two years ago when I was 54.

EstherGreenwood63 · 05/08/2025 13:53

Singapore and Thailand are super for lone women.

YourBrickTiger · 06/08/2025 13:30

Has anyone mentioned Cyprus?
