Travel mug

Can anyone help? I bought a Contigo travel mug a few months ago. My coffee tastes foul in it and I didn't find it kept it that hot. I am not sure if it's because I have black coffee but there was a definite metal taste. It wasn't very good. I wonder if I have just picked up a faulty cup and I should try again or if there are any others you can suggest?

Does it need to be totally leakproof to be thrown in a bag, or just for the car? If it’s the second, I have a Yeti Rambler with the magslide lid and it’s great. Nice to drink from, keeps drinks warm and cold, dishwasher safe, fits in cup holders, but the mag slide lid isn’t leak proof. They sell leakproof lids too, but I haven’t tried to say either way if they’re good.

The other ones I like the look of and have heard good things about are the Zojirushi one, and the Stanley Aerolight.

If you're happy with one that you actively have to seal, then I'd recommend a Bru cup. They're ceramic coated inside which definitely improves the taste. Just be careful to check that you've closed it before chucking it around!

my Stanley travel cup is brilliant. Completely leak proof, no horrible taste and keeps coffee piping hot for about 3 hours, longer if I pre warm the mug with boiling water first

I bought a ninja thirsti in the Amazon sale and it's great. Kept my coffee hot.

I've brought it on holiday and it's been great for iced water and slushies round the pool

Just to add since you haven’t specified a budget Ember make a travel mug. I have the Ember cup at home and it’s fantastic. It’s holds coffee at the temperature you set it electronically rather than being insulated to slow temperature drop. Super expensive though (mine was bought second hand like new) and the travel mug is more so, but might be worth looking into if you have a big budget.
