Cheap day out for kids near Watford area?

Planning on meeting halfway/centrally with a few different family members this week. We are fairly scattered all over and the best location would be around Watford/St Albans area. Ideally we'd just like a big country park type place where we can have a picnic and the kids (from age 1 to 9) can all play together, so a place with a decent playpark, toilets! Etc. I've found a couple farms but they're quite pricey - we don't mind paying but when it's just for the kids to meet up for a few hours and the adults to all chat and catch up we don't really want to pay for a full day out. Any suggestions from people who know the area....?

Cassiobury Park in Watford or Verulamium Park in St Albans.

Cassiobury Park?
Otherwise Wendover Woods are just down the A41 - you just pay for parking.

Cassiobury park is good, particularly if the splash pools are open. You can paddle in the river and watch the canal boats go through the locks. Parking is very limited, you might want to park in Whippendell main car park and walk down.

Yeah, another vote for Cassiobury here!

If you DID want to pay something for a bit more infrastructure, Knebworth is pretty good for kids, and free with Historic Houses membership. Easier parking than Cassiobury!
