I'm sure many MN'ers already know that it's a word that identifies a group of people in relation to a particular place.

and just fyi some examples which may be of interest? 😊

Thank you! I hadn't heard of demonym either so I feel I have learnt something today already. Great article, I love words and language so that was genuinely really interesting.

Demo - people (e.g. demographic, democracy)
Nym - name (e.g. patronym, pseudonym)

I love learning the roots of words. Means you can make a good stab at new words.

I did Latin at school in the 1990s. At the time I thought it was a complete waste of time and gave it up asap, but it has actually been really useful. My brother did Ancient Greek as well and he can work out loads of words!

I only knew ‘Salopian’ because a friend went to Shrewsbury School and used to keep stacks of their alumnus mag ‘The Old Salopian’ in his bathroom.

I’ve never heard Loiners.

I've heard "Loiners" many times, usually chanted by a crowd at the rugby.

Next time though I shall quietly think to myself ooh a demonym!
