Spending time doing nothing much, does it make you feel guilty?

When I say doing nothing, I mean unproductively so scrolling on Mumsnet / Facebook etc. I realise I often feel a bit guilty about it although it doesn't stop me doing it. It's not like anyone needs me to do anything and everything is done, so I'm not doing this at the expense of other important or essential activities. It's just that it's unproductive.

It does me right now and I want to change my life so I’ve deactivated all other socials and here I am still on here. I just want to do more but at the same time it’s baby steps x

22:59 I'd be more worried if anything other than a wind down like 'leisure scrolling' was modus operandi

Titsywoo · 27/07/2025 23:06

I'm fine doing it for a bit in the evening. During the day I have to stay productive or I feel annoyed and bored. I can't watch tv during the day either.

StrawberryCranberry · 27/07/2025 23:08

You can't be productive 100% of the time OP. It's good to have some chill time whether it's watching telly, scrolling on your phone or reading a book.

Free time is productive. It allows you to relax and recharge your batteries. We all need to do that from time to time, and it is good for you.

Taking time to care for your own wellbeing is not something to feel guilty about.

I feel like a failure when I don’t do anything and sit watching things online. Then I seem to freeze and can’t think of things I need to do, so I just carry on sitting doing nothing and feel guilty

Sometimes in the morning I think ‘for the next 20 minutes I’m doing nothing other than mn or Fb or something. I’m fed up of everything being about rushing about and getting things done, I once saw on mn people talking about cleaning their bathroom while eg the kids were in the bath and I thought why not just chat or play with them. We all need to slow down!

No, because resting is 'doing something'. You're resting. That's important too.
