Let's be honest. The BBC feels the need to have this as a major headline for woke reasons. The reality is few people give a shit....

Because it makes a change to have good news headlining for once!

Sandyoldelbows · 28/07/2025 09:18

I was in a taxi last week and the driver - classic stereotype of an 50+ male, white, opinionated driver was talking about how he was enjoying watching the women’s games and that their footwork was better than the men. I know nothing about football but I felt a moisture in the eyes at how far we have come. This conversation would have been inconceivable 10 years ago.

lljkk · 28/07/2025 09:19

Same (deluge of media coverage) could be said any time 'England' (or a single English/British player in single player sports) wins an important national competition in any sport. Cricket... rugby... tennis... Tour de France... the response is arguably always a bit hysterical. Because it's a British winner. Male or female makes no difference to the level of news coverage.

I watched last night's game eagerly, btw !!

We all watched the final last night and DS and his mates have watched all the England games. DH and I aren't even English

@Yayitstheholidays Who talked them down? It’s been totally upbeat everywhere! BBC is one big love in! If you mean are people talking about tactics? Yes, of course. It’s football. No one is saying it’s not a great achievement and I never heard much that wasn’t positive but some people were very concerned about giving away first half goals and poor penalty taking. We are allowed to have discussions.

I wish there had not been any negativity, but unfortunately I don’t think the Lionesses and Sarina Wiegman would agree with you. In fact, I heard Lucy Bronze and then the journalist Flo Lloyd-Hughes this morning describing just how resilient and determined the team had had to be to counteract all the negativity, including claims that they would be the first returning champions to fail to progress beyond the group stage. This went far beyond ‘discussion of tactics’ and there was a huge amount of personal abuse levelled at individual players.

TizerorFizz · 28/07/2025 09:43

@Sandyoldelbows Taxi driver is wrong! The women players are smaller than men but the men are more skillful overall. Just look at the best men and there’s quite a bit of difference. Women obviously play differently snd that’s fine.

spoonbillstretford · 28/07/2025 09:44

mids2019 · 28/07/2025 07:15

We have to consider though that women s football is still essentially an amateur game and there are relatively few true professional players in that can be fully supported by a footballers salary. We then have the massive disparity with wages in the men's game which must be the greatest gender inequality in salary ever.

The success of the likenesses although great does mask this 'reality and I think you have a lot of fair weather support for the women s game where someone jumps on the euro bandwagon yet haven't a clue which teams constitute the wsl and certainly no haven't attended many gamss. I think this heaps unrealistic expectations on women players as the global internet in the national game surpasses the monetary aspect of the sport (you could argue the same with gold or f1).

Things have changed vastly in the last three years and winning this tournament means further development will happen faster than it would have otherwise. It's all good. I wish I'd had the opportunities 40 years ago that little girls will have now, and also that it had happened even 10 years earlier to benefit my DDs more.

Well, football is in the eye of the beholder. Men of course have had decades and billions of pounds to hone and develop their skills, and they are stronger overall, but football is an emotional game and the senior England men's team lack that tenacity and depth of emotion and always have had. Perhaps our focus on technique is misplaced.

WhyamIinahandcartandwherearewegoing · 28/07/2025 10:09

I’m not even English but I watched it, with my English son. It was fab and we were both screaming at the penalties.

Any UK team having success on the world stage is worth a feature on the news, surely?

Tia247 · 28/07/2025 10:12

I have very little interest in anyone playing football but I think it's great! Fantastic that the women are able to win international tournaments, especially when the men can't.

God yet another goady bollocks thread

this place is depressing these days

Morning

That's the extent of your ability is it 😂

FrippEnos · 28/07/2025 10:36

I would much rather see sports as the top headline as there is so much to celebrate, the euros, lions tour, cricket, netball, rugby.
All hard working people generally good people that aspire to be good role models. (even some male footballers).

Than the dirge that is influences, who has what plastic surgery, which nepo baby has done what and which media made person is out with another media made person.

If the OP is having difficulty with this then they are going to struggle with the rugby world cup.

It doesn’t matter if the taxi driver was right or wrong about the skill levels. The point is he would probably never even watched women’s football, never mind had a point of view (let alone a positive one) about women’s football 10 years ago.

NapoleonsToe · 28/07/2025 10:46

It's a moment of national sporting importance OP, don't be silly.

Cynic17 · 28/07/2025 10:48

I have no interest in any football - women's or men's - so haven't and don't watch. But I know that huge numbers do, so it's great to see the women getting the same level of attention as the men always do.

I expect The Mall will be pretty much deserted for the victory parade tomorrow.

I think that was sarcasm!

TizerorFizz · 28/07/2025 13:48

We don’t have an Olympics this year or men’s World Cup. The men get around 25 million viewers. Yes, I do agree women’s football is growing but, like a lot of people, I watched internationals 10 years ago, but I don’t follow a team. I follow a men’s team and watch them. It just means more. However a win is a win and what’s not to like?

Words · 28/07/2025 15:47

I'm with you OP. I loathe football. All the shrieking and howling and 'celebrating' and the endless stuff on the news. I immediately dive for the off button!

Also the remarkably inane things the pundits say. Eg ' there can only be two teams in the final' . Even I know that.
