Let's be honest. The BBC feels the need to have this as a major headline for woke reasons. The reality is few people give a shit....

I'm with you OP. I loathe football. All the shrieking and howling and 'celebrating' and the endless stuff on the news. I immediately dive for the off button!

Also the remarkably inane things the pundits say. Eg ' there can only be two teams in the final' . Even I know that.

But that's just generally not liking football. The OP is saying specifically nobody is interested in the Lioness's historic victory because it's women's football.

Well, I didn’t and don’t, but each to their own. 🤷‍♀️. Men’s football - yes.,,⚽️

What was 'historic' about it? They haven't been going long I don't think?

Why are the men not called Lions?

I always say it would save a lot of fuss and bother if they simply skipped straight to the bit where they all take turns at kicking the ball in the net. 😂

The mens rugby team are Lions.

Lions seems the wrong word to describe the mens football team somehow.

What a brilliantly witty and incisive observation on the game of football.

DuncinToffee · 28/07/2025 17:29

The mens team gets call Three Lions, the youth team Young Lions

DuncinToffee · 28/07/2025 17:34

The first official UEFA Womens Championship (Euros) was played in 1982, not that new

It's historic because no senior England football team has won a tournament back to back, or even more than once

I thought they had three lions on the shirt. Didn't know they were actually called the three lions?

MargaretThursday · 28/07/2025 17:56

I thought the BBC didn't choose their headlines - they put the stories out there and the top ones are done by the highest number of people looking at them.

So the fact it's top story means that's the story more people have looked at than any other today.

They are pushing it down our throats to distract from the protests at young male migrants being housed in hotels.

They are pushing it down our throats in order to rather thoroughly rub the men's football team's collective noses in it.

When the men prove that they can also win the Euros twice in a row their supporters will be entitled to their silly digs at women's football, but until then...

Words · 28/07/2025 18:32

Wasn't trying to be witty o r incisive. I was aiming for self deprecation but obviously missed the mark. The whole thing is a bit of a mystery to me.

So if the male rugby players are lions what are female rugby players called? I will google.

I am amazed this goes back to the 80s. I thought women's football was very much more recent than that. I was in fifth form in 1982 and can't recall anything about it.

The Germans have certainly got something right over the years looking at that chart. I must look up what they call themselves too.

DuncinToffee · 28/07/2025 18:43

There was hardly any coverage of the womens game so very easy to miss.

England played in the unofficial 1971 world cup in Mexico with massive crowds, which was ignored because of the FA ban on womens football.

You can watch their story on iPlayer

Storyville - Copa '71: The Lost Lionesses

A Storyville documentary about an extraordinary football tournament, told through the fearless voices of the women who took part and including recently uncovered archive footage.

@Sandyoldelbows Taxi driver is wrong! The women players are smaller than men but the men are more skillful overall. Just look at the best men and there’s quite a bit of difference. Women obviously play differently snd that’s fine.

Such a pity the men can't win though, innit?

They are the first English international football team to win a European or world champions trophy not on home soil.
They're the first Euro winners to have won the championship after losing their first game.

Thanks Duncin. I may even take a look! Just popped my head out of the internet rabbit hole I disappeared down.

It seems the German team are simply the ladies'team . Very Teutonic and to the point. One of them has the most unfortunate surname though Shock

And the female Lions are the Red Roses. I guess any Yorshirewomen just have to grin and bear it.

My international team would be called the Sparkling Unicorns and I would definitely have the magnificent Ms Minge as the captain.

MissMarianHalcombe · 28/07/2025 19:03

About 15 years ago, my husband commented that women’s football wasn’t high enough quality to bring in the sponsors for it to be televised & therefore popular (or worth watching). I argued that if they were supported financially from grass roots like the men, the quality would follow- they just needed the time & equal opportunity. Here we are in 2025, with not only watching every minute but him shedding tears when they lifted the trophy. I like to think I’ve educated him in women’s rights (on lots of topics) & changed how he thinks. Even if we don’t all love football, those women should be rightly celebrated.

Words · 28/07/2025 19:04

Well I agree re the results, although they have a long way to go to equal Germany in terms of achievement don't they.

But at least they actually won the damn thing which the Lion men have failed to do since?1964?

Can you imagine the absolute mayhem there would be if the chaps ever managed that? It makes me wince.

Words · 28/07/2025 19:30

Sorry the NOT lion men (doh)
Maybe they should be the Hamsters?

DuncinToffee · 28/07/2025 19:34

@Words There is a very good documentary presented by Clare Balding called 'When football was banned'

So many lost years to catch up with

the80sweregreat · 28/07/2025 19:53

I do feel a bit sorry for them with all the World Cup talk I’ve heard today! No pressure or anything, but can you win that as well ? Let them enjoy this win first.

TizerorFizz · 28/07/2025 21:35

@Words You do realise there is significantly more depth in the men’s game don’t you? No 6-1 against poor opposition in a competition so the men face substantial opposition. Look at who plays in the Prem league. Many world greats and then look at France, Spain, Italy and Germany and Latin America. Very different landscape. The women’s game is doesn’t have worldwide strength in depth. It follows the money. Plus waaaay more people watch men’s football at all levels. That’s not to say women’s football isn’t great fun, but it’s not the same.

Vivienne1000 · 28/07/2025 21:46

12.million watched it. Something good to report for a change. Looks like you are totally out of touch.

I’ve not seen that, but I quite often pass (or queue in traffic ) by the blue plaque to Dick Kerr’s Ladies and think about it.

"I’m Scottish & may have had a tear in my eye at them winning, great role models."

Bloody hell, we are only at page 3 of the thread and already have the hat trick of Northern Irish, Welsh and Scottish posters cheering on England for the win.
Do you know how rare that is? Rocking horse shit level rare. They should get be some kind of funding for that alone.

Haha that is true!
