Should I go to A&E?

Had lower wisdom teeth out on Thursday and been on two lots of antibiotics since, amoxicillin and another one beginning with n maybe.
Woke up in severe pain at 3am and since then the ibuprofen and paracetamol have barely dulled it. Rang the dentist at 9am and they said to just keep going with the ibuprofen and antibiotics. Rang 111 at about 4 and a dental nurse called me back and basically said the same.
My right side is really swollen and a red patch has formed which has spread. This is what worries me most. I’ve attached pics - one taken at 3am and one at 5pm.

Should I go to A&E?

I would go A&E redness is normally sign of infection

KilkennyCats · 26/07/2025 19:07

Oh, wow, definitely 😮

DustyTangerine · 26/07/2025 19:07

I’m definitely not an expert but that’s definitely getting worse - I would go I think

Yeah, i would go to a&e. I had lower wisdom tooth out last year and it needed to be packed twice cos of dry socket. Was horrendously painful.

hottubwhocares · 26/07/2025 19:10

Yes definitely A&E now, looks like it could be cellulitis and you can get a nasty complication of infection there called Ludwig’s angina which can lead to airway compromise. Are you having trouble swallowing at all? Either way it needs attention asap

RoseInBloome7 · 26/07/2025 19:25

Yes …. A&E

Isthismykarma · 26/07/2025 19:26

No trouble breathing or swallowing at all, just struggling to open my mouth properly which is expected after wisdom tooth surgery.
Booked and uber to a&e now, praying it just needs some extra antibiotics or something x

You need to get to A&E

clarepetal · 26/07/2025 19:31

Hope they sort you out soon. X

cannynotsay · 26/07/2025 19:37

oh that doesn’t look good. Definitely A&E

charabang · 26/07/2025 19:39

Good luck. I think you're right to be taking yourself off to get checked out. Let us know how you get on.

Sassybooklover · 26/07/2025 19:41

Glad to hear you're going to A&E. I agree with others - red and swollen, is usually the sign of an infection. Does it feel warm to the touch? Where you've had a tooth out, an infection is always possible, and it's always better to be safe than sorry.

PluckyChancer · 26/07/2025 19:42

Hope you manage to get seen within a reasonable timescale and get some strong antibiotics. .

LushLemonTart · 26/07/2025 19:42

Glad you're going.

CagneyNYPD1 · 26/07/2025 19:44

I’m normally firmly in the “you probably don’t need A&E” camp but looking at your photos, I’m glad you have decided to go.

@Isthismykarmawell done for taking that photo at 3am this morning so that you can keep track and compare. That was very wise. Good luck.

2chocolateoranges · 26/07/2025 19:49

I’m normally in the same camp as @CagneyNYPD1 but I think it’s verging on Emergency. It looks really swollen and the redness is growing. It could affect your breathing and swallowing so it needs attention by the doctor.

hope you get seen quickly.

Thedoorisalwaysopen · 26/07/2025 20:00

Gosh poor you OP. That looks awful.

ScaryM0nster · 26/07/2025 20:03

Most A&Es don’t do dental stuff, so it may well be a wasted trip.

It's worth looking at the dental emergency info for your area as you may want to get that going in parrallel with your potentially wasted A&E trip.

If it was toothache I would have thought the same but with there being a redness that is growing I was wary of cellulitis or even sepsis.

Ive just been triaged and there’s something white in the back of my mouth, they’ve got me to the out of hours gp so hopefully a smaller wait :)

Hopefully you wont be waiting to long and they can help and reassure you. You did the right thing going even if its just for reassurance as at least someone has actually seen it.

needNC · 26/07/2025 20:29

Out of hours gp can hopefully get you on ABs asap. Poor you 😔

cryinglaughing · 26/07/2025 20:31

Looks painful, hope the GP can get it sorted for you.

TomatoSandwiches · 26/07/2025 20:32

You are absolutely right to go, imagine if your throat swelled to close overnight in your sleep.

I hope you get seen quickly, good luck.

slightlydistrac · 26/07/2025 20:33

This is bigger than a dental emergency. If that swelling gets much worse, the OP's airway could be compromised. Not only that, but sepsis does not hang about. This is an A&E job.

I speak from personal experience of something similar. I didn't take myself to A&E, I collapsed unconscious and had to go in by ambulance.

Devontownie · 26/07/2025 21:54

Hope your nearly sorted of not already home now. That looks so painful. You were absolutely right to go.

I've had so many dental issues, and infections like that. Never worth messing with.
