Anyone on flightradar - JFK tonight

So I hate flying but am flying to JFK next week. I have been tracking my flight for the last few weeks as I do find it reassuring but tonight it has been circling near JFK for over an hour. I have also seen a few other flights from Europe diverting to other places, like Boston/Philadelphia.

Does anyone know what is going on? I hate to be circling and being diverted would be awful too, though I don't really care as long as I get on the ground in one piece sooner or later.

Can I suggest you join the Lovefly group on Facebook. There is so much calm rational explanation for all parts of flight with weekly podcasts from pilots etc plus other people who have overcome their fears. The support is amazing and someone will be able to help you settle your fears

Looking at the weather radar it looks like there are some thunder storms in the area, probably just avoiding those. Hope your flight goes well

Ime of JFK, a holding pattern is quite common. Much like coming into LHR at busy times. An hour would be a bit more unusual but not unheard of.

Oh god, thunder? I remember the last time I was in New York it was thundering as we took off but I was so sick and tired (pregnant) that I didn't care.

We have been diverted to both Boston and Halifax when flying to JFK. But that’s pretty unusual. I bet there’s bad weather today.

I have a friend at an airport there. Thunderstorms in the area are causing delays

It’ll be the thunderstorms. I live in the NE US and they’re all over tonight. Thunderstorms here aren’t like anything I experienced back home either. They can be really wild. Just on my drive home it went from bone dry to waterfall of water in 2 seconds flat. And another one is starting just now.
