Can anyone else see the nights drawing in already?

Is it just me? Slowly but surely... Warwickshire here.

I love Autumn 🍂

Not at night really but I do live in Scotland where it’s light until gone 10 pm. I have noticed it’s not as light in the morning more. I was up at 5 the other day and there was a definite change.

IMissSparkling · 26/07/2025 08:39

I live in Scotland too, can't say I've noticed yet.

I picked a small bag of them from the brambles outside City of London Cemetery … they were delicious with my Greek yoghurt for breakfast 😋

I hope you left them to soak in water for a few hours to get all the fly maggots out?

I can do that in summer too. There is no season in the UK where you can't still comfortably wear a cardigan in the evening. There is only one season when you don't also need a thermal base layer, coat, hat, gloves, scarf and umbrella.

A cardigan! We’ve had weeks of boiling weather even at night. A cardigan has def not been needed.

The other day i was thinking how it was feeling like September - and then remembered it was still only July!

I do have to admit I’m begrudgingly feeling that autumn chill in the air. But I’m off on holiday at the end of August, so I’m hoping that delays it!

Yes, Wednesday seemed to be lighter until a lot later than Thursday where I am. I love the Summer. Thoroughly enjoy it. Can’t bear the dark evenings and mornings or cold wet weather. But we have to have Winter to reach Spring and Summer.

noodledrama · 26/07/2025 09:32

I noticed it was much duskier at 9.30 this week than it has been for a while. But as a PP said, with the longest day now more than a month behind us, it’s about now the change will be more obvious. I love to observe how the seasons develop and change, and this time of the year always feels so bittersweet. It’s actually one of my favourite times of the year, there is still plenty of summer left to enjoy, but there are hints of autumn starting to creep in. August is one of my favourite months and it starts next week!

The longest day was over a month ago.

This time of year is odd - good weather and ever shorter days. I always wonder why it was never aligned so that our best weather has the longest days!!

This is called seasonal lag! The longest day is in June, but July/August are usually hotter as we’re surrounded by water and it takes weeks/months to heat up. The opposite true in winter - shortest day in December but water loses heat slowly so coldest temperatures are January/ February. I’ve only just discovered this so sharing here

Yes, and it doesn't get light as early either. I find it depressing!

No I didn’t. They were washed thoroughly and I had zero ill effects !

WonderingWanda · 26/07/2025 12:30

Yes, I was collecting ds from training the other night and through it seemed darker. How depressing. I do like autumn but I'm not ready for the nights to draw in.

Hmmm… I noticed that The Range and B&M were clearing their summer stuff out, and there were more autumnal things were appearing. It’s only around 9 or 10 weeks til October so the Halloween crap fest will soon be on the shelves.

I noticed that in B&M yesterday too. I’m a teacher so I’ve just started to get into summer mode as well. Every year I forget that if I want summer stuff in there I need to buy it early.

Our living room lights turn themselves on at sunset, taking the time of sunset rather than the actual amount of light, and I’ve noticed they are coming on earlier.

catinacone · 26/07/2025 12:32

Yes, I noticed it this week when I had to put the lights on in the upstair landings in the evening when I haven't had to for the last couple of months.

PestoHoliday · 26/07/2025 12:33

Hush now, @FuckYouLeslie !

Let those of us who thrive on the glories of spring and summer enjoy it. There will be plenty of time to be dark and glum in later months. No need to think such awful things in July.
