Can anyone else see the nights drawing in already?

Is it just me? Slowly but surely... Warwickshire here.

I love Autumn 🍂

I’m usuallly such a summer girl, but I am definitely feeling ready for autumn this year.

echt · 26/07/2025 00:15

From the other side of the world, our Australian days are drawing out and I'm loving the prospect of spring. To be fair it's different here as there are always trees and shrubs in flower all year round and we've had a very sunny winter, though cold at night due to lack of clouds.

justasking111 · 26/07/2025 00:18

I'm happy until January, February, hate those months. Don't like heatwave weather, been a cool breezy week here with showers. Chill at night.

The longest day was over a month ago.

This time of year is odd - good weather and ever shorter days. I always wonder why it was never aligned so that our best weather has the longest days!!

Thermal lag.

ErrolTheDragon · 26/07/2025 00:22

yes, the evenings are getting that bit shorter, like they always do but knock off the talk of autumn, we’re not even into august yet and the school holidays have only just begun for some!😂

manicpixieschemegirl · 26/07/2025 00:42

Yes and I love it! I’ve enjoyed summer but it feels like it’s gone on forever this year and I can’t bear the humidity much longer. I’m more than ready for autumn.

Yep.
Soon be Christmas Wink

😂 Please don't!

I have noticed and the only season I like is summer. I don't like the trees to lose their vibrant foliage, don't like flowers getting all sad & floppy, emphatically do not find a nip in the air invigorating, and am depressed by dark days. Yes, I do live in the wrong country!

MrsSunshine2b · 26/07/2025 01:34

Yes, and I hate it. What do people love so much about Autumn? Days and days of pouring rain? Daylight hours from 10am-4pm? Energy bills going up? Miserable, tired kids trying to make it through a 7 week half term?

Don't forger it's cosy and you can snuggle on the sofa with twinkly lights and a hot choc while eating stews and crumble. 😂

I can do that in summer too. There is no season in the UK where you can't still comfortably wear a cardigan in the evening. There is only one season when you don't also need a thermal base layer, coat, hat, gloves, scarf and umbrella.

I know. I was being sarcastic. 😉

Yes, I love it! Autumn is my favourite season 🍂

GentleSheep · 26/07/2025 01:56

Not yet, but I was thinking earlier today it won't be long and I will be glad this year, have had enough hot, dry days!

Wadadli · 26/07/2025 01:59

TeapotTallulah · 25/07/2025 21:55

Blackberries are out too!!

I picked a small bag of them from the brambles outside City of London Cemetery … they were delicious with my Greek yoghurt for breakfast 😋

coxesorangepippin · 26/07/2025 02:55

Ooh I do love autumn myself actually 🍁

I have noticed the nights drawing in slightly, which I do like

The light is different at this time of year, more mellow

frozendaisy · 26/07/2025 06:22

Some of the trees have leaves turning brown, it’s July still nothing to celebrate will be dreadful for wildlife. Too dry trees can’t keep their green.

Our youngster has only just broken up for the summer holidays so we intend to enjoy his summer holiday as much as we can life’s too short to wish for the next season all the time.

It still very much feels like summer here.

Wash your mouth out!

I've promised myself I'm quitting MN in September to avoid the bloody Xmas talk!

If you see me around then - kick me out.

frozendaisy · 26/07/2025 06:37

I think I must really be Italian (hence the desire to retire there) because I much prefer the long, lazy summer evenings, conversation outside round a table with easy fresh food
prefer espresso to tea
tiramisu to crumbles
sandals to blankets
olive oil to rapeseed
oranges to apples

I must be Italian

The warmest weather always comes after midsummer at the end of June because of the warming effect on land and water which retains the heat. This is the same reason why the sea is warmer in July than in May.

suki1964 · 26/07/2025 06:44

Noticing the mornings being dark more then the nights drawing in

Had to switch the lights on this week to get ready for work and running lights on the car are on going in

I leave for work @5:30

June , it never really gets dark here

MassiveOvaryaction · 26/07/2025 07:34

Apologies to those I have offended with my use of the C word on this thread Grin

MontyDonsBlueScarf · 26/07/2025 08:15

My theory on this is that it's not actually changing as fast as it feels it is (that's what I use to console myself, anyway)!

Day length is similar to a sine wave, so the day to day change is smallest at the peak (the solstice) and largest in the middle (the equinox). But by the time the equinox arrives you're already used to a big day to day change. You notice it more when it starts to change more rapidly. A bit like riding a rollercoaster 😀

Tumbleweed101 · 26/07/2025 08:26

Yes, it is setting just before 9pm where I am now rather than close to 9.30pm that it was at midsummer. The sun is also dipping low enough that we are getting proper night back too, rather than having a hint of light through the night.

I’m sleeping better now the dawn is later as with windows open the birds were waking me before 4am at one point!

I’d be happy with 8pm dusks and 5.30am dawns lol. I hate it when it is dark on leaving the house and dark on leaving work. I miss my garden time.

I have loved the long, sunny summer. I love September and October but not so keen on November and December for dark and weather.

Hollyhobbi · 26/07/2025 08:28

Yes. But it’s been grey in Dublin for days now

JaneyG1 · 25/07/2025 22:53

Weirdly, I wondered why it was still light so late. I’m in the North West and it’s still light ish.

N Oxfordshire/Warwickshire borders here.
Nights are still light but 9.30pm is more twilight than sunset at the moment.
