How do I sort a list please?

I've got a list of foods and calories in notepad, like this:

...
almond croissant 382
new yorker rye roll 401
all butter croissant 291
chocolate croissant 350
cinnamon Danish 413
ham and cheese croissant 312
...

Is there any way I could use a program (e.g. Excel) to sort them in order of calories without having to type them all in again? The list is quite long to sort manually.

You can enter/paste this list into excel and then easily sort by any column. Select the data, Click the data tab then sort option. Hope this helps

In excel you need the numbers in a separate column to descriptions. Highlight both description and number in your range, sort by the number column.

The problem you're going to have is that excel will just see it all as 1 string of text and won't differentiate the numbers from the text

Copy into excel, then this might help to separate the numbers

https://www.indeed.com/career-advice/career-development/how-to-separate-numbers-from-text-in-excel

or if it's always 3 digits at the end this might be easier

https://www.extendoffice.com/documents/excel/1656-excel-extract-first-character.html

Once you have the text and numbers separate you just need to click on any of them and then click on sort and filter in the home menu and select A-Z. It will ask if you want to expend the selection, say yes and it will keep the right foods with the right calorie counts

Excel will do it very quickly but if you aren’t proficient, you might struggle with some of the input suggestions some have given. If you DM me the list and, I could do this in seconds!

Do you only eat pastries?

TheEndlessNight · 24/07/2025 15:30

I would recommend Nutracheck op, think it's around £35 for the year and has all foods on it that you keep on your daily list.

Edited to remove as I got caught on the phone and everyone else answered!

columnatedruinsdomino · 24/07/2025 15:45

Also put croissant first then flavour, then you can sort all the croissants together!

Good old Mumsnet.

AllBranEater · 24/07/2025 16:21

Thanks @BoredZelda , that's very kind. No, I don't only eat pastries - I gathered the data from a website that was categorised by type of food, so I can work out what I want to buy from Pret when I go into town tomorrow....
