Which spelling mistakes really grate with you?

Maybe it should be 'what', not 'which'. Anyways..

-aircrafts. Grrr! The plural of aircraft is 'aircraft', not 'aircrafts'. Even aviation companies make this mistake. No excuse.

BTW, I know spelling isn't easy for some so let's keep this light hearted.

“Women” when it should be a singular “woman”.
”Heals” - on shoes - especially on “sandles”!
There’s an awful lot of “councilling” going on too.

Jetsmummy123 · 24/07/2025 14:52

Thankyou

More sayings than spellings:

My partner says ‘that needs done’ ….say what?
Fountain of knowledge - technically not incorrect, but annoying
Nip it in the butt
irregardless

HungreeHipp0 · 24/07/2025 14:58

Exited instead of excited

And 'use' instead of 'you' when writing about 2 or more people. If they wrote 'yous' it would be wrong and just as irritating, but at least you could understand how they've ended up with that.

Are you me?Smile

Again, usage: 'know where' instead of 'nowhere'. Oh dear.

At the risk of being a spelling snob, Facebook Groups really betray a poor standard of not just spelling but written English generally. Sentences that need breaking up or separating altogether, lack of capital letters when needed, lack of punctuation other than full stops and the aforementioned misspellings. Paragraphs too. I hope folk don't write serious letters or documents like they make FB posts. I'm sorry if they do. I must be thankful for my good phortune.

I've noticed a massive upswing in the number of people that use 'where' instead of 'were'. I started a thread on here about it (and was shouted down by most of the people that contributed) but I still see it all the bloody time!

We was wrong. I done it. I seen it.

"Went" when grammatically it should be "gone", as in:

"I have went..."

I see it frequently on MN.

A large percentage of thread titles contain typos which means that readers have to try and fathom what the OP means. I think it should be possible to edit a typo in a thread title as well as edit the text of posts.

LadySuzanne · 24/07/2025 16:18

"Wondering" when it should be "wandering".

Newdoggo · 24/07/2025 16:18

Borrowed someone something??? No you lent it to them grrr

Siberianskies · 24/07/2025 16:20

This is mine too, it’s very American and drives me a bit nuts. There are more American habits like that that wind me up but I can think of any right now.

Oftentimes… 😱

TaupeRaven · 24/07/2025 16:28

Not a spelling mistake per se, but people using "draws" instead of "drawers" bothers me more than it should

HesterLee · 24/07/2025 16:28

Noone, when meaning no one or no-one. I'm seeing this more and more on MN and really wonder what people are hearing when they read noone??

MaloryJones · 24/07/2025 16:58

Though its done on purpose on here, due to a long ago shopping list that was found ...

It's adjective and adverb.

An everyday occurrence = it's an adjective giving information about a noun

I drink tea every day = an adverb which is giving information about a verb (in this case, how often it's done, but there are other types as well)

Thank you, but I do know what an adverb is, and there weren’t any in the particular examples I quoted.
‘Every day’ if describing/modifying a verb, as in drinking, is an adverbial phrase. A suitable adverb would be ‘daily’.

GentleSheep · 24/07/2025 17:07

I've just seen a classic on my local news: "Today my cat got nurtured". I thought, what?? so went to look at the post, she meant 'neutered' ! 😂

DazedAndConfused321 · 24/07/2025 17:15

I lived in Scotland for a while, working for a British company and had to put up with people using local spoken terms in offical work-related writing, and insisting that it's correct. Unrelated terms, but you get the gist- they simply don't belong in English press releases. E.g. 'he wouldny take he's coat" "These clothes need ironed" "I hit ma heed (head)" "I want to go oot tae dinner". While I respect the Scottish language and local vernacular, if you're asked to write in English, you write in English.

HollyGolightly4 · 24/07/2025 17:16

I defiantly agree with a lot of these...

llittledoveblue · 24/07/2025 17:16

Been instead of being.
“I love been on holiday”

annoys me more than it should

TryingToBeHelpful267 · 24/07/2025 17:17

Not really spelling just misunderstanding, but I can’t stand it when people say brought when they mean bought.

sashh · 24/07/2025 17:18

Pastrina · 24/07/2025 13:40

I worked with a woman who always said pacific instead of specific

There used to be an advert about eye drops that said the formula was created 'pacifically'.

It took ages for it to go off air.

DESPATCHED....its bloody dispatched

Both are correct. Despatch was used more in the 19th C, Dispatch is more common now but both are legitimate spellings.

(Guess which century's books I've been reading lately)

Bellendula · 24/07/2025 17:22

It may have been said already but when people say ‘I couldn’t breath’ instead of ‘breathe’ drives me crackers

TheignT · 24/07/2025 17:24

As long as I can work out what they mean I don't worry about it.

Boohoo76 · 24/07/2025 17:26

Their and there. My brother can’t get it right. He’s a teacher…
