Which spelling mistakes really grate with you?

Maybe it should be 'what', not 'which'. Anyways..

-aircrafts. Grrr! The plural of aircraft is 'aircraft', not 'aircrafts'. Even aviation companies make this mistake. No excuse.

BTW, I know spelling isn't easy for some so let's keep this light hearted.

It's en route, not ON route.

Seeing "on mass" more frequently as well, which is just as irritating.

GentleSheep · 24/07/2025 13:30

You lost me at 'anyways' ! One of my pet hates!

eqpi4t2hbsnktd · 24/07/2025 13:35

Yourselves instead of you.
Myself instead of me.

Pastrina · 24/07/2025 13:40

I worked with a woman who always said pacific instead of specific

Pastrina · 24/07/2025 13:40

Coconutter24 · 24/07/2025 13:20

I’m not sure I understand this comment? Are you implying Op has used the incorrect spelling? (They haven’t)

It’s a joke

BumpyWinds · 24/07/2025 13:40

Brightbluebell · 24/07/2025 13:06

Definately instead of definitely….

Or, even more annoyingly, defiantly...!

BreatheAndFocus · 24/07/2025 13:49

defiantly - instead of definitely! It’s everywhere!
weary - instead of wary.
loose - instead of lose
dosen’t - instead of doesn’t

MiddleAgedDread · 24/07/2025 13:50

I've noticed Americans use "accommodations" and there seems to be an increasing trend of using "He done" rather than "he did", which I guess is grammatical rather than spelling but it drives me mad!!

LadySuzanne · 24/07/2025 13:50

"per say"

"rediculous"

You lost me at 'anyways' ! One of my pet hates!

Apologies. I usually say 'anyhoo'.

The words you quote are not spelling mistakes.

Fair point. It's a matter of usage and 'aircrafts' isn't even a word, at least not in English.

on route and on mass have reminded me of

on accident

<grinds teeth>

marshmallowfinder · 24/07/2025 13:57

Your, when it should be you're.(You are.) They mean COMPLETELY DIFFERENT THINGS.

AffIt · 24/07/2025 13:59

I have a particular gripe with the misuse of 'obligated' when the user actually means 'obliged'.

I think it's related to the common misuse of the reflexive pronoun: people think it makes their writing sound more formal / educated, when the truth is the opposite.

I'm also mildly fascinated by loose for lose / draws for drawers. I'm Scottish and in my accent (most rhotic accents, I think) those words sound completely different.

The Surf advert that was out a few years ago made me scratch my head, until a friend from SE England kindly read it out loud to me. 😁

LadyMonicaBaddingham · 24/07/2025 13:59

I've begun to notice the letter 'g' being increasingly dropped from written words as well as in speech, i.e. 'doin' 'goin' 'sleepin'. Never mind the use of 'been' for variants of 'is being', 'has gone', 'have been' etc... "I been hospital" "he been shop" "they been pub".

Coconutter24 · 24/07/2025 14:00

Pastrina · 24/07/2025 13:40

It’s a joke

Oh, obviously not a funny one 🙈

AffIt · 24/07/2025 14:02

Ooh, I remembered another one, which is remarkably common on MN: 'viscous' for 'vicious'.

I get that it's probably autocorrect, but it does lead to some quite funny interpretations.

YourBrickTiger · 24/07/2025 14:10

I know a girl who says 'Rockweiller' when referring to the dog and 'Great Dame' when referring to the other larger breed.

Realisation14 · 24/07/2025 14:16

Haven't read the whole thread so don't know if these two have been mentioned already but the one's that bother me are 'Rediculous' and 'defiantly' when they mean definitely.

Stanislas · 24/07/2025 14:16

All these mentioned and phase and faze. Autocorrect does have a lot to answer for.

Good point about "draws." This is not a mistake that we rhotic speakers make.

BashfulClam · 24/07/2025 14:38

Brought rather than bought. Wrong your/you're. Loose instead of loose. Could/should/would have. Special mention to ‘sat’ such as ‘I was sat..’ ‘we were sat…’ ‘she was sat..’ etc…,should be ‘were sitting’.

Dontlletmedownbruce · 24/07/2025 14:39

What way do you spell 'wedding fair'. I think technically it's fayre but it just seems pretentious, most places just say fair. Nit that it's something I need to spell very often as i got married 20 years ago

TheMeasure · 24/07/2025 14:41

(Not spelling but grammar) People using ‘text’ as a past tense verb.
The thing is, it’s frowned upon here on MN to correct these things but the result of that is that it perpetuates the error and people are re-informed ed in their belief that the wrong spelling/usage is acceptable.
IT. IS. NOT!! (Stamps foot)

Allseeingallknowing · 24/07/2025 14:48

We was wrong. I done it. I seen it.
